Trendy Leopard-Print Handbag by Evelyn Siatra
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted handbag featuring a leopard-print colorwork design. The finished bag measures 15 inches (38 centimeters) wide at the bottom and 11 inches (28 centimeters) at the top, with a height of 12.2 inches (31 centimeters) after felting. The base of the bag is 5.5 inches (6 centimeters) wide. This is a structured handbag suitable for everyday use, combining functional design with eye-catching animal print patterning.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Trendy leopard-print handbag employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to create its finished form. The bag is worked in the round without turning, meaning the knitter maintains continuous circular construction throughout the project. Construction begins with knitting a rectangular base, after which stitches are picked up around all four edges of this foundation piece. The bag is then worked upward from the picked-up stitches to complete the sides and top opening.
The leopard-print pattern is created using the stranding colorwork technique, also known as Fair Isle knitting. This method involves carrying two colors of yarn across the back of the work while knitting with the active color, allowing the creation of detailed multicolored patterns within a single row. The colorwork gauge is measured at 10 by 10 centimeters (or 4 by 4 inches) to ensure proper pattern scale and finished dimensions.
The completed handbag undergoes felting, a finishing process that transforms the knitted fabric through controlled washing and agitation, creating a denser, more structured material suitable for a functional bag.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and abbreviations including:
- CO (cast on) – the foundation method for creating initial stitches
- BO (bind off) – the finishing technique to secure stitches at the edge
- k (knit) – the primary stitch creating the fabric
- p (purl) – the reverse stitch used for textural variation
- St st (stockinette stitch) – the smooth, classic knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows
The pattern also references standard knitting notation such as beg (begin) and the practice of marking the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker, which is moved up each round to track the beginning of circular rows.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern uses aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good structure and drape. Aran weight is ideal for handbag construction as it produces a fabric with sufficient body to hold its shape after felting. The pattern requires two colors of aran weight yarn to execute the leopard-print colorwork design. Specific needle size and yardage requirements are referenced in the complete pattern documentation. Circular needles are necessary for working the bag in the round without turning.
