Product Description
Inspired by the vibrant plumage of the Common Loon (also known as the Great Northern Diver), the Tremolo hat features stranded colourwork in the striking hues of this iconic Northern American bird. During breeding season, the loon habitats the lakes and waterways of northern America and Canada, and can often be found in Greenland and Iceland too! Known for its distinctive checkerboard patterning and unusual vocalisations (wailing tremolos, hoots and yodels) the loon is one of the most loved animals of the north.
The Tremolo Hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up, with three sizes available – child, adult small and adult large. The pattern is written for the magic loop method, but could be easily adapted for dpns if preferred.
Yarns used for the sample are Cascade 220 Fingering in both Black and White, and Madeline Tosh Euro Sock in ‘Esoteric’; although any fingering weight yarn can be substituted to suit your own palette and style!
Tremolo Hat by Tawny Threads
What Is Being Made
The Tremolo Hat is a knitted beanie inspired by the vibrant plumage of the Common Loon, also known as the Great Northern Diver. This iconic Northern American bird inhabits lakes and waterways across northern America and Canada, with populations also found in Greenland and Iceland during breeding season. The hat captures the loon's distinctive visual character through stranded colorwork knitting, creating a striking patterned design that reflects the bird's checkerboard patterning.
Sizes and Finished Dimensions
- Child: 48 cm (approximately 19") circumference, 18 cm (approximately 7") height
- Adult Small: 53 cm (approximately 21") circumference, 19.5 cm (approximately 7.75") height
- Adult Large: 58.5 cm (approximately 23") circumference, 21 cm (approximately 8.25") height
Knitting Techniques Used
The Tremolo Hat employs stranded colorwork, a fundamental knitting technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create intricate patterned designs on the fabric surface. This method allows knitters to incorporate the striking hues of the loon into a cohesive, visually dynamic hat. The pattern utilizes the magic loop method for working in the round on circular needles, though traditional double-pointed needles are also an acceptable alternative for knitters who prefer that approach.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The primary stitch structure is stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric base. The gauge is 24 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch, establishing the foundation for proper fit across all three sizes. The stranded colorwork pattern is worked into this stocking stitch base, with color changes creating the distinctive checkerboard and patterned effects inspired by the loon's plumage.
Yarn and Materials
The Tremolo Hat is designed for Fingering/Sport weight yarn, which is a fine yarn category ideal for creating detailed colorwork with excellent stitch definition. The pattern recommends specific yarn options to achieve the loon-inspired color palette:
- Main Color (MC) and Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Cascade 220 Fingering in Black and White
- Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Madeleine Tosh Euro Sock Esoteric or Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light in Oceanic Mix
Knitters require 1 skein each of the main color, contrast color 1, and contrast color 2. The total yardage needed varies slightly by size but remains modest, making this an economical project.
Needles and Notions
- Circular Needles: US 3 (3.25mm) in 24 inches (60cm) length, or size needed to obtain the specified gauge
- Alternative: Double-pointed needles (dpns) of the same size, if preferred
- Notions: Stitch marker and tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
Difficulty Level
The Tremolo Hat is rated as a beginner-friendly project, making it an excellent introduction to stranded colorwork knitting. While colorwork requires attention to tension and color management, the straightforward stocking stitch base and clear pattern structure provide an accessible entry point for knitters learning this decorative technique.
