Product Description
Trellis Cloche is a great pattern for showing off a variegated or multicolored yarn. The easy fit makes a great hat for those who don't like a tight hat.
This Pattern is written for circular knitting needles and calls for a worsted weight yarn. I have used Malabrigo Worsted on all the current versions and they have all turned out beautifully.
Notions: • US 6 and 8 circular needles (16 inch) • US8DPNs(setof4or5) • Measuring tape • Darning needle • Scissors • Stitch Marker
Trellis Cloche by IsolaHandmade
What Is Being Made
The Trellis Cloche is a knitted hat designed for the whole family, available in five graduated sizes ranging from 17.25 inches to 23.25 inches in circumference. This versatile pattern creates a classic cloche silhouette suitable for all ages, making it ideal for coordinated family sets such as Mommy/Daddy & Me gift combinations or winter family photo shoots.
Design and Stitch Work
The hat features a detailed Trellis stitch pattern that forms the primary visual element of the design. The designer recommends selecting lighter colors or dark colors with slight variegation to properly highlight the intricate stitch work and dimensional texture of the trellis motif. The stockinette background provides contrast to the decorative stitch pattern, creating visual depth and interest throughout the hat.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques:
- Circular knitting in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles for seamless construction
- Garter stitch in the round created by alternating purl and knit rounds
- Yarn overs (YO) for creating decorative openwork within the trellis pattern
- Slip stitches (sl) worked purlwise for smooth stitch transitions
- Decreases including knit two together (K2tog) for shaping the crown
- Make One increases (M1L) for strategic shaping and stitch count adjustments
- Marker placement for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections
Yarn and Materials
The Trellis Cloche is designed to work with worsted weight and aran weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern was photographed using Malabrigo Worsted in three colorways: Pearl, Uva, and Pink Frost. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 63 yards for the smallest size to 114 yards for the largest size, making this an excellent project for using yarn stash or smaller quantities.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires US 6 and US 8 circular needles (12-inch length for the two smallest sizes and 16-inch length for the three larger sizes) along with US 8 double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a darning needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a measuring tape for gauge and sizing verification.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 4 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch within the trellis stitch background. Five size options accommodate different head circumferences: 17.25 inches, 18.75 inches, 20.25 inches, 21.75 inches, and 23.25 inches, ensuring proper fit across a range of ages and head sizes.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Trellis Cloche requires familiarity with circular knitting, basic increases and decreases, and pattern reading. Knitters should be comfortable working in the round and managing stitch markers to successfully execute the trellis stitch pattern.
