Product Description

This stunning TRANSLUCENT pullover is knit from DK weight wool yarn and lace weight mohair and silk yarn stripes for a light weight, wear-anywhere pullover. The idea of simple wool and mohair striping is only enhanced by the amazing hand-dyed Viola Yarns by Emily Foder.

You can use any one of a number of DK choices coupled with a similar or contrasting color mohair silk to achieve a sophisticated or more fun loving look. The sweater can be knit in a shorter or longer version. And did I mention pockets? Oh yes, and side vents!

Translucent Knit Sweater by VERSACIKNITS

What Is Being Made

Translucent is an oversized knit sweater available in both shorter and longer silhouettes. The design features a relaxed, comfortable fit with significant positive ease, making it suitable for layering or as a standalone statement piece. The sweater is offered in four size options ranging from XS/S through 3X, accommodating various body types and fit preferences.

Design Details and Sizing

This pattern provides two length options to suit different style preferences. The shorter version measures 21 to 24¾ inches in length, while the longer version extends to 23 to 26¾ inches, depending on size. Finished circumference measurements range from 48¾ inches for the smallest size to 64 inches for the largest, offering generous oversized proportions. The model shown wearing the longer version in size M/L stands 5'3" tall with a 39" bust, demonstrating how the sweater drapes with 14 inches of positive ease.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates several advanced techniques to create its distinctive aesthetic. The pattern employs the Italian Tubular Cast-On method for even stitch counts, creating a professional, seamless edge. Wrap and turn (w&t) short-row shaping is utilized to add dimension and structure to the garment. The sweater is worked using two-row striping, which requires managing two yarns simultaneously and switching between them to create the visual pattern throughout the piece.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Knit Through Back Loop (k1-tbl): Used selectively for textural variation and twisted stitch effects
  • Two-Row Striping: Alternating between two yarns every two rows to create the translucent color effect
  • Slip Stitch (sl 1): Worked purlwise to create clean edges and transitions between color sections

Yarn and Materials

The Translucent sweater is designed to be knit using two complementary DK-weight yarns worked together in two-row stripes. The pattern specifies Viola Yarns' Organic Merino DK for yarn A, which is composed of 100% merino wool. For yarn B, Mohair Lace in DK weight is recommended. The sample shown was knitted in the colorway Frozen Earth for both yarns, creating a cohesive, subtle striped effect. Both yarns are worked simultaneously on the same needles, with the yarn not in use carried along the edge of the work.

Gauge and Needle Requirements

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. This gauge is achieved using the larger needle size with both yarn A and yarn B worked together in the two-row stripe pattern. Knitters are advised to take time to check their gauge before beginning the sweater to ensure proper fit and finished measurements.

Pattern Structure

The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and a full techniques section available on the VERSACIKNITS website. Marker placement (pm) and marker removal (rm) are used throughout to track pattern repeats and construction sections. The pattern accommodates four distinct sizes with specific stitch and row counts provided for each, allowing customization based on desired fit and finished measurements.
