Product Description

This fun little adult-sized beanie comes with a plethora of cable combinations. I thought “Trail Mix” was a suitable name since it pretty much has a little bit of everything. Although this hat only uses simple left or right leaning cable crosses, the various combinations of the two result in: twists, braids, horseshoes, and X’s and O’s. The braids are carried down through the brim of the hat as well in three spots around the hat. They are evenly spaced, but you can choose to position a braided section off to the side of your forehead or centered when you put it on.

What Is Being Made

The Trail Mix Beanie is an adult-sized knit hat designed by Erin Gates of Lizzy Knits. This intermediate-level knitting pattern features a playful combination of cable stitch variations that create visual interest throughout the hat. The beanie gets its name from the diverse mix of cable combinations incorporated into the design, much like the variety found in trail mix.

Design Features and Cable Work

This beanie showcases multiple cable stitch combinations created from simple left and right leaning cable crosses. Despite using only these two basic cable techniques, the pattern generates a variety of visual effects including twists, braids, horseshoes, and X's and O's patterns. The braided sections are strategically positioned in three evenly spaced locations around the hat, running down through the brim. Knitters have the flexibility to position a braided section centered on the forehead or offset to one side when wearing the finished hat.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Cable stitches: The pattern relies on simple left and right leaning cable crosses as the foundation for all cable work
  • Cable needle alternative: The cables are small enough to be knit without a cable needle, allowing experienced knitters to use the cable-without-needle technique to save time
  • Braid integration: Braided cable sections are incorporated into both the body and brim of the hat
  • Decreases: Shaping is achieved through decrease techniques to form the crown of the hat

Pattern Structure

The Trail Mix Beanie pattern is organized into three distinct sections: the brim, the body, and the decreases. Instructions are provided in multiple formats, including both written instructions and stitch charts for the brim section, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of following the pattern.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, making it a relatively quick knit compared to finer yarn weights. Knitters will need knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn and basic knitting supplies. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF from Lizzy Knits.

Difficulty Level

The Trail Mix Beanie is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. While the cable techniques used are described as simple, the multiple combinations and variations of these stitches create a pattern suitable for knitters who have mastered basic cable work and are ready for more complex stitch combinations.
