Product Description

Written out - no charts!

One size - but you can edit it by knitting less rows or adding additional rows.

I use a DPN rather than a cable needle - saves having to buy additional needles in various sizes and I find it's easier to work with.

Hygge Yarn by Red Heart is incredibly soft - almost silky. I used 3 full skeins to make this shawl which measures about 34 tall.

Tracks in the Snow Shawl by Maggie Schott

What is Being Made

Tracks in the Snow is a knitted shawl designed by Maggie Schott as a simple yet stunning accessory project. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a one-size shawl, though the design allows for customization—knitters can continue working in the established pattern to enlarge the shawl or stop early and work only the garter section for a smaller finished piece. The shawl is suitable for intermediate-level knitters looking to expand their skills with cable techniques.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Tracks in the Snow shawl incorporates several key knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The primary stitch technique featured in this pattern is the C3F (Cable 3 Stitches Front), which is explained within the pattern instructions. This cable stitch is executed by sliding the next 3 stitches onto a cable needle or double-pointed needle and holding them at the front of the work, then knitting 3 stitches from the main needle before knitting the 3 stitches from the cable needle.

Additional stitches and abbreviations used throughout the pattern include:

  • K: Knit stitch
  • P: Purl stitch
  • M1L and M1R: Make 1 Left and Make 1 Right increases, used to shape the shawl
  • BO: Bind Off to finish edges
  • CO: Cast On to begin the project
  • PM and SM: Place Marker and Slip Marker for tracking pattern repeats

The pattern also incorporates garter stitch sections, which provide a simple yet textured foundation for the shawl design and can be worked to adjust the final size.

Materials and Tools Required

The Tracks in the Snow shawl is designed to work with chunky-weight yarn, making it a quick and satisfying project to complete. The pattern specifies RedHeart's Hygge or similar yarn in a bulky weight, requiring approximately 3 skeins totaling 390–430 yards.

Essential tools for this project include:

  • US Size 10/6mm circular needle in a quite long length to accommodate the growing size of the shawl
  • US Size 10/6mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) specifically for working cable stitches
  • 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and repeats
  • Darning needle for finishing and weaving in ends

The use of chunky-weight yarn combined with larger needles allows this intermediate project to work up quickly while the cable techniques provide an engaging skill-building opportunity for knitters ready to move beyond basic stitches.
