Product Description
Car jams have never been so much fun! These super-squishy Toy Vehicles are easy to make and come with lovely simple details, and can also be used as little throw cushions. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the vehicles are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). With this knitting pattern you can make a yellow cab, a cop car and an ambulance. You can use this basic vehicle template to create a fleet of vehicles in different colours too. The window struts are added using Swiss darning (duplicate stitch), the ambulance uses intarsia colour-work, and the taxi stranded colour-work. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Toy Vehicles Mini Motors Knitting Pattern
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern by Amanda Berry provides instructions for creating three distinct toy vehicles using the knitting craft. The collection includes a taxi, police car, and ambulance, each designed as small stuffed toys suitable for children. These mini motors are constructed entirely through knitting techniques, making them soft, cuddly playthings rather than hard plastic toys.
Craft and Primary Technique
The Toy Vehicles Mini Motors pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. Knitting is a textile craft that creates fabric by interlocking loops of yarn using two needles. This technique allows crafters to build three-dimensional toy forms by increasing and decreasing stitches strategically throughout the pattern. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that while the pattern is not for absolute beginners, it does not require advanced shaping techniques, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience.
Stitches and Knitting Techniques
Although the PDF does not explicitly list individual stitch abbreviations, the pattern employs standard knitting stitches typical of toy construction. Knitted toys are generally created using basic stitches combined with shaping methods such as increases and decreases to form the vehicle bodies, wheels, and details. The pattern incorporates seaming techniques to join knitted pieces together, which is essential for constructing three-dimensional toy forms from flat knitted panels.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 100% acrylic DK yarn (also known as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply). You will need one 100g skein in each of six colors:
- Red
- Yellow
- White
- Grey
- Black
- Blue
The pattern was originally photographed using Hayfield Bonus DK yarn in the specific shades of Signal Red, Sunflower, White, Light Grey Mix, Black, and Denim. However, any similar DK weight yarn is suitable for this project, allowing crafters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended finished size and drape.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm. Additional notions necessary for completing the toys include:
- A darning or tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces together
- Two 200g bags of toy filling for stuffing the vehicles
- White and red embroidery thread or floss (a couple of metres total) for adding details
- Stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping sections
- Buttons for creating headlights and rear lights on each vehicle
- Pins for securing pieces during the assembly and making-up process
Pattern Details
This is a downloadable PDF pattern designed by Amanda Berry, an independent designer. The pattern is intended for personal use only and is protected by international copyright laws. The intermediate difficulty level makes this project suitable for knitters who have completed basic projects and are ready to tackle toy construction with shaping and assembly components.
