What is Being Made

This is a knitted toy pattern for Buttercup, a unicorn character, designed by Wooly McWoolface. The finished toy measures approximately 25cm (10 inches) in size, making it a small, cuddly stuffed animal suitable for play or display. This downloadable PDF pattern provides complete instructions for creating an amigurumi-style toy using traditional knitting techniques.

Craft and Primary Technique

The project uses knitting as the primary construction method. This is classified as an intermediate difficulty pattern, indicating that crafters should have foundational knitting skills before beginning. The knitted pieces are constructed flat and then assembled, stuffed, and finished with additional embellishments to create the complete three-dimensional toy.

Stitches and Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit (K): The fundamental knit stitch forms the base of the fabric
  • Purl (P): Purl stitches are used in combination with knit stitches
  • Stocking Stitch: Alternating rows of knit and purl stitches create smooth, even fabric texture
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog): A decrease technique used to shape the toy pieces
  • Purl Two Together (P2tog): A purl-based decrease for shaping
  • Increase (Inc): Increases are created by knitting into the front and back of the same stitch to add stitches where needed
  • Make a Stitch (M1): An alternative increase method created by lifting a strand from in front of the next stitch and knitting into the back of it
  • Loop Stitch: A decorative technique created by knitting without pulling the stitch off the left-hand needle, bringing yarn forward under the thumb and back between needles to create a loop, then knitting into the same stitch and completing the loop by pulling the first stitch over the second

Materials and Tools Required

The pattern calls for specific materials to complete the toy:

  • Yarn: Double knit (DK) weight wool in white and yellow colors
  • Needles: A pair of 3.25mm (UK size 10) knitting needles for working with the DK weight yarn
  • Felt: Small amounts of black and white felt for facial features and details
  • Stuffing: Toy stuffing material for filling the completed knitted pieces
  • Additional Tools: A darning needle for seaming and finishing, scissors for cutting felt and trimming yarn, craft glue for adhering felt pieces, a crochet hook for finishing details, and a pin for holding pieces in place during assembly

Pattern Structure and Assembly

The pattern provides abbreviations and clear instructions for each technique used. Crafters will knit individual pieces using the specified stitches and shaping techniques, then assemble them into the final toy form. The combination of knitted fabric with felt accents and stuffing creates a soft, huggable finished product suitable for the Toy Story Buttercup character design.
