Tip Up Town is an annual winter festival here in Michigan. Held during January at Houghton Lake, Michigan’s largest inland lake, it is a festival with lots of fun and a little tomfoolery! Two men who wanted to put their town on the map created this winter carnival in 1951. It takes place over two weekends in January and can draw up to 80,000 people, all looking for a good time in winter!
I designed these socks with lots of fun and a little tomfoolery! The Latvian Twist gets you started, the easy to remember Check pattern keeps you going and the Star Toe finishes them off with lovely detail.
They are knit from cuff to toe with fingering weight yarn. The Latvian Twist and Star Toe give them a little extra kick!

Project Overview
Tip Up Town Socks are a festive knitted sock design inspired by Michigan's famous winter carnival held annually at Houghton Lake. This downloadable knitting pattern celebrates the playful spirit of the Tip Up Town festival, which has drawn crowds of up to 80,000 visitors since its creation in 1951. The design incorporates multiple decorative techniques to create socks with distinctive visual interest and texture.
What Is Being Made
These are cuff-to-toe knitted socks designed for intermediate knitters. The pattern creates a complete pair of socks using fingering weight yarn, with construction beginning at the cuff and progressing down to the toe. The finished socks feature three distinct design sections, each showcasing different knitting techniques to create a garment that balances functionality with decorative detail.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Latvian Twist: Featured at the cuff, this traditional technique provides textured detail and an eye-catching beginning to the sock
- Check Pattern: An easy-to-remember repeating pattern that forms the main body of the sock, designed for consistency and visual rhythm
- Star Toe: A decorative toe finish that adds detailed shaping and visual interest to complete the sock
Stitches and Construction
The pattern employs a combination of twisted stitches and colorwork techniques. The Latvian Twist creates dimensional texture through twisted stitch manipulation. The Check pattern provides a straightforward, repeatable stitch sequence that maintains momentum through the sock body. The Star Toe incorporates shaping stitches to create a decorative pointed finish. The cuff-to-toe construction method means the sock is worked from the top down, allowing for easy length adjustments and a custom fit.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 100 grams of fingering weight yarn (also called 4-ply weight). The sample shown was knit in Mini Mochi by Crystal Palace Yarns, colorway 103
- Needles: Double-pointed needles, size US 2 (2.75 mm)
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with basic sock construction, double-pointed needle techniques, and following stitch patterns. The Latvian Twist and Star Toe techniques add complexity beyond beginner sock patterns, while the Check pattern is described as easy to remember, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters willing to learn new techniques.
Design Details
The socks are designed with lots of fun and a little tomfoolery, reflecting the spirit of the Tip Up Town festival itself. The combination of the Latvian Twist and Star Toe techniques provides what the designer describes as a little extra kick, elevating these socks beyond basic everyday wear into a statement piece that celebrates Michigan culture and winter festivities.
