Product Description
The original idea for this doughnut pattern was to make something small enough to fit into the pocket of my dungarees pattern, and although it is a little tight, it does just fit.
I tried so many prototypes trying to reduce the size further but they didn’t work out as circular, so this was as small as I could go and therefore the pattern is recommended to be worked with very thin needles 2.25mm (US 1) in order that the doughnut made fits into the dungaree pocket. If you do intend it for this purpose then please use a thin 4ply yarn with the 2.25mm/US 1 needles, check your gauge and don’t be too generous with the amount of stuffing that you use.
If you prefer you can use the doughnut as a stand-alone item, size is then less important and you can knit it in DK weight yarn with 3mm needles to give a slightly larger size.

What is Being Made
Tiny Little Doughnuts are miniature knitted toy doughnuts designed as small decorative or play items. Each finished doughnut measures approximately 3.5cm (1¼ inches) in diameter, making them perfect for dollhouse collections, craft embellishments, or small gift items. The design features a two-color construction that mimics the appearance of real doughnuts with distinct icing and dough portions.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at intermediate difficulty level. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with finishing methods typical of small toy construction. The doughnuts are created using the magic loop or small circular knitting method to achieve the compact, three-dimensional form required for these miniature pieces. Stuffing techniques are used to create the dimensional shape before seaming, which is a standard approach in toy knitting patterns.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern uses basic knitting stitches worked at a tight gauge suitable for toy making. The construction involves knitting two separate pieces—one in Yarn A for the icing color and one in Yarn B for the dough color—which are then seamed together. The gauge is worked at 9 stitches by 11 rows per 1 inch, which is a relatively tight gauge that creates a dense, durable fabric appropriate for small toys that will be handled frequently.
Materials and Yarn
- Yarn: Two contrasting colors of 4 ply (fingering weight) yarn, with approximately 4 meters (4 yards) of each color required
- Needles: A pair of 2.25mm (US 1) knitting needles to accommodate the fine yarn weight
- Notions: Toy stuffing for filling the doughnuts, a tapestry needle for seaming, and optional seed beads or embroidery thread for decorative details on the tops
Design Details
The two-color yarn approach creates visual separation between the icing (Yarn A) and dough (Yarn B) portions of each doughnut. Optional embellishments include seed beads or embroidery thread applied to the tops, allowing makers to customize their doughnuts with additional decorative elements.
