Tin Man from Wizard of Oz Knitted Doll
What is Being Made
This is a knitted toy representation of the Tin Man character from the Wizard of Oz, designed by Andrew Lucas. The finished doll measures approximately 17 centimeters in height and is suitable as a decorative toy or chocolate orange cover. The project combines basic knitting techniques to create a three-dimensional figure with distinct body and head sections.
Techniques Used
The Tin Man doll employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The construction begins with a cast-on foundation, followed by strategic increases to shape the body. Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric texture, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat surface. Decreases are used to shape the shoulders and head, tapering the fabric to create definition between body sections. The pattern concludes with a bind and tie technique, where remaining stitches are threaded through using a tapestry needle to close the top of the head securely.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the basis of the fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used in alternation with knit stitches to create stocking stitch
- Increase (inc) – adds stitches to expand the fabric width, particularly for shaping the head
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count and creates shaping at the shoulders and head
- Purl two together (p2tog) – a decrease worked on purl rows to further taper the head
- Garter stitch (gs) – knit every row, though primarily stocking stitch dominates this pattern
Materials and Tools
The pattern requires 3.25mm knitting needles as the primary tool. For yarn, you will need 25 grams of grey wool for the main body and head, which provides the characteristic Tin Man coloring. Oddments of double knitting wool in black and red are used for details such as facial features and accents. A small amount of polyester stuffing is included to give the doll structure and dimension. A tapestry needle is essential for threading yarn ends through stitches during the bind and tie closure and for finishing details.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized into clear sections. The body is constructed first by casting on 25 stitches and immediately increasing in every stitch to reach 50 stitches, creating a wider base. Stocking stitch is worked for 21 rows to establish the body length. The shoulders are then shaped by knitting two stitches together across the entire row, reducing back to 25 stitches. The head section begins with increases worked strategically to expand to 37 stitches, then stocking stitch continues for 17 rows. Final decreases progressively taper the head before the remaining stitches are closed off using the bind and tie method.
