Product Description

Being immersed in a sci-fi culture, the name Time Warp came to mind immediately when I saw the stitch pattern these socks are based on.

Knitted from the top down, an uneven rib flows into the lace and cable pattern that twists and turns from cuff to toe. Time Warp is a stretchy sock for a comfortable fit with a slip-stitch heel flap.

The sock pattern includes both charts and written instructions for the Time Warp Lace. Instructions for the uneven rib and slip stitch heel are written.

Foot length is adjustable to fit.

What is Being Made

Time Warp Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed to fit mid-foot circumferences of 19cm, 23cm, or 26.5cm (7.5 inches, 9 inches, or 10.5 inches respectively). The socks feature an adjustable foot length to accommodate individual sizing needs, with a fixed leg length of 14cm (5.5 inches). These socks are knitted from the top down, making them an ideal project for knitters who prefer this construction method.

Design and Pattern Features

Inspired by science fiction culture, the Time Warp design incorporates a distinctive stitch pattern that flows seamlessly from cuff to toe. The pattern begins with an uneven rib at the cuff, which transitions into a combined lace and cable pattern. This lace and cable work twists and turns throughout the leg and foot of the sock, creating visual interest and texture. The design is engineered to be stretchy, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit on the wearer's foot.

Construction Techniques

The socks are constructed using several key knitting techniques:

  • Top-down construction: The socks are knitted starting from the cuff and working downward toward the toe, allowing for easy adjustments to foot length
  • Uneven rib: The cuff features an uneven rib pattern that provides elasticity and a finished appearance
  • Slip-stitch heel flap: A slip-stitch heel flap is incorporated for durability and a professional finish at the heel
  • Lace and cable integration: The pattern combines lace stitches with cable work, creating a complex and visually striking design

Stitches Used

The Time Warp pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and abbreviations:

  • C4B (Cable 4 Back): Slip 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the back of work, knit the next 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable twist that crosses to the right
  • C4F (Cable 4 Front): Slip 2 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the front of work, knit the next 2 stitches, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable twist that crosses to the left
  • K (Knit): The fundamental knit stitch used throughout the pattern
  • P (Purl): The purl stitch, used to create texture and pattern variation
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together): A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one
  • Slip stitches: Used in the heel flap construction for a neat, durable finish

Yarn and Materials

Time Warp Socks are designed to be knitted using 4 ply sock yarn, a lightweight yarn weight specifically engineered for sock construction. The yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 258 metres (282 yards) for the smallest size, 320 metres (350 yards) for the medium size, and 399 metres (436 yards) for the largest size. The design shown in the pattern was knitted using Literally Yarn. A cable needle is required for executing the cable stitches throughout the pattern.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable working with cable stitches, lace patterns, and top-down sock construction. The combination of uneven ribbing, integrated lace and cable work, and slip-stitch heel flap techniques requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with reading complex stitch patterns.

Pattern Format

Time Warp Socks is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, designed by independent designer Karen Butler. This format allows knitters to access the complete pattern instructions, stitch abbreviations, sizing information, and yardage requirements digitally.
