What is Being Made
The TianTian Cardigan is a top-down knitted cardigan designed for babies and young children. This garment is worked flat for the body and in the round for the sleeves, offering a practical construction method that allows for easy fitting adjustments. The cardigan is available in nine sizes ranging from newborn (0/3 months) through 8 years old, with bust circumferences from 50cm to 72cm and back lengths from approximately 34cm to 54cm.
Techniques Used
The TianTian Cardigan employs a top-down construction method, which is a popular approach in modern knitting design. The pattern begins at the neckline and progresses downward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they work and adjust the final length as needed. The piece is strategically divided for body and sleeves at a specific point in the pattern, after which the body continues to be worked flat (back and forth in rows), while the sleeves transition to circular knitting in the round. This hybrid approach combines the ease of flat knitting for larger sections with the seamless construction benefits of circular knitting for the sleeve tubes.
The pattern incorporates standard shaping techniques including make 1 increases (M1A), knit 2 together decreases (K2TOG), and slip, knit, pass over decreases (SKPO) to create proper garment shaping and fit.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the TianTian Cardigan is stockinette stitch (knit on right side rows, purl on wrong side rows), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a V-texture on the front and bumpy texture on the back. The gauge for this stitch is 22–24 stitches by 28–30 rows over a 10cm × 10cm swatch when worked on 4mm needles after blocking, providing a guide for tension consistency across different sizes.
Materials and Tools
The TianTian Cardigan is designed to be worked in Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine 120, a fine merino wool yarn that provides softness and breathability ideal for baby garments. The yardage requirement varies by size, ranging from 350m for the smallest size (0/3 months) to 850m for the largest size (8 years), with skein quantities ranging from 3 to 6 skeins depending on the chosen size.
Essential needles and accessories include:
- Circular needles in 40cm and 60cm lengths for flat knitting sections and transitioning to in-the-round work
- Double-pointed needles in both 4mm and 3mm sizes for sleeve cap shaping and ribbing
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
- Stitch holders for securing stitches temporarily during construction
- Buttons for the cardigan closure
- Ribbon as a decorative or functional finishing element
Difficulty Level
The TianTian Cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project. This classification reflects the pattern's combination of fundamental techniques (stockinette stitch, basic increases and decreases) with more advanced construction methods (top-down shaping, transitioning between flat and circular knitting, and managing multiple garment sections simultaneously). Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations, managing multiple needles, and understanding basic garment shaping before attempting this design.
