Product Description

The 3 bobble hats are made with 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool and are therefore beautifully soft. You can use any aran yarn but pure soft wool is best for warmth and comfort. The hat patterns are in 3 sizes including small, medium and large heads. The pattern includes instructions to make the hats bigger if you want even larger sizes. The main part of the hat is crocheted and the ribs are knitted. You can choose your own colours. There are instructions for UK and US terminology. For the pompom I used cardboard but you can use a large pompom maker that you can purchase online or in haberdashery shops.

Three Bears Bobble Hats: Crochet and Knitting Pattern Collection

What Is Being Made

The Three Bears bobble hats collection features three coordinating beanie-style hats designed by Yarn Designs. This pattern set includes three distinct sizes to fit different age groups: toddler hats suitable for head circumferences up to 18 inches, child hats for head circumferences up to 19.5 inches, and adult hats for head circumferences up to 21 inches. Each hat features a bobble texture detail that adds visual interest and dimension to the finished garment. The collection is presented as a downloadable PDF pattern with instructions provided in both UK and US crochet and knitting terminology, making it accessible to crafters using either convention.

Techniques and Stitches Used

These patterns employ both crochet and knitting techniques, offering versatility for crafters who work with either method or wish to combine both approaches within a single project. The primary stitch used in construction is double crochet, which creates a dense, structured fabric ideal for warm winter headwear. The distinctive bobble texture that gives these hats their name is achieved through bobble stitch techniques, which involve working multiple stitches into the same stitch base and closing them together to create three-dimensional puff details across the hat surface. This combination of foundational stitches with decorative bobble elements creates visual texture while maintaining structural integrity suitable for intermediate-level crafters.

Yarn and Materials

The Three Bears bobble hats are designed to be made with 100% Bluefaced Leicester wool, a premium natural fiber known for its softness and warmth. The recommended yarn weight is aran or worsted weight, which provides good stitch definition and creates a fabric with appropriate drape and insulation for winter wear. Pattern instructions specify using a 4mm crochet hook for the swatch gauge. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 17 rows measuring 4 inches when working double crochet stitch, though individual tension variation is acknowledged and crafters are advised to create their own swatch to verify gauge before beginning the full project.

Difficulty Level

These patterns are rated as intermediate difficulty, making them suitable for crafters with foundational knowledge of both crochet and knitting techniques. The combination of basic stitches with bobble stitch details requires understanding of stitch construction and the ability to follow multi-step instructions, but does not require advanced shaping techniques or complex color work. The availability of three sizes within one pattern set also allows crafters to practice the same design across different scales.
