Product Description
The bold, graphic stars make this contemporary U.S. flag hat a must have.
The hat is sized for newborn through adult. A headband option is also given. (The headband is best for the adult sizes because of the height of the stars.)
Make it in any yarn that knits at either 5 or 5.5 stitches per inch. Use cotton yarn to take the chill off a summer night, or use wool to celebrate all year long.
The instructions assume that you know how to do Fair Isle. If you do not, check our First Fair Isle headband pattern for a tutorial, or look at our website’s video tutorial at www.reallyclear.com.
Three Cheers! A Flag Hat by Cynthia Spencer
What Is Being Made
Three Cheers! is a contemporary patriotic knitted hat featuring bold, graphic stars as the primary design element. The pattern, designated HT-013, is sized to fit babies through adults, making it a versatile project for multiple age groups. Additionally, the pattern includes instructions for creating a coordinating headband option using the same colorwork techniques and yarn quantities.
Design and Colorwork
The hat showcases a striking patriotic aesthetic through its use of three colors: blue, red, and white. The bold star motifs are worked using colorwork techniques that create a contemporary graphic appearance. The color distribution requires approximately 150 yards of blue yarn as the primary color, with approximately 50 yards each of red and white yarns for the star details and accents. The headband variation uses the same color palette and proportional yarn quantities, allowing crafters to create a coordinated set.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level knitting project employs stranded colorwork techniques to create the graphic star patterns. The hat is constructed using circular knitting methods, which is a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. The pattern requires working in the round on circular needles, transitioning to double-pointed needles as the crown decreases. Crafters will need to manage multiple colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension and stitch definition throughout the colorwork sections.
Needles and Tools
The pattern accommodates two yarn weight options with corresponding needle sizes. For worsted-weight yarn, knitters use U.S. size 5 (3.75 mm) and size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles, both measuring 16 inches in length. For DK-weight yarn, the sizes adjust to U.S. 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 (4 mm) circular needles. A set of double-pointed needles sized between U.S. 4 and 6 (4–5 mm) is required for the crown shaping phase. The pattern also calls for a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Yarn and Materials
Three Cheers! accommodates both worsted-weight and DK-weight yarns that knit at a gauge of 5 to 5.5 stitches per inch. The total yardage for the hat is approximately 250 yards combined across all three colors, while the headband option requires approximately 150 yards total. The flexibility in yarn weight allows crafters to choose based on desired fabric density and finished hat drape, with needle sizes adjusting accordingly to maintain proper gauge.
Difficulty Level
Designated as an advanced project, Three Cheers! requires solid foundational knitting skills, including proficiency with circular needle techniques, working in the round, and managing stranded colorwork. Crafters should be comfortable reading colorwork charts and maintaining even tension across color changes to achieve the crisp, graphic appearance of the star motifs.
