Product Description
This little guy is very easy and quick to knit. He is knitted in 2 pieces - one for the body with just one seam along his back and a cute curly tail. Have some fun with different shape and sized buttons for his cute little snout.
He is knitted on 2 needles with 8 ply (DK) yarn so even a beginner can make them. He is about 8cm (3 1/4") high. There is some minimal shaping.
I do not allow the copying of my patterns of any type but I do allow the selling of the finished goods
DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE BUTTONS I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM FOR CHILDREN UNDER YEARS OF AGE.
This Little Piggy.... A Quick and Easy Pig Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
This Little Piggy is a charming knitted toy pig designed by Amalia Samios. The finished pig measures approximately 8cm (3 1/4") in height, making it an ideal small handmade gift or decorative piece. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern is categorized as a toy project and is suitable for knitters of all experience levels seeking a quick and straightforward make.
What Is Being Made
The pattern creates a small stuffed pig toy with distinct body shaping and color details. The design incorporates multiple yarn colors to define different parts of the pig, including the main body in pink yarn with contrasting white and purple elements for added visual interest and character.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for toy construction:
- Increases (inc): Used strategically throughout the early rows to shape the pig's body, creating the rounded form characteristic of the design
- Decreases (k2tog): Applied in later rows to reduce stitch counts and shape the pig as the body tapers
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rows, providing a smooth, classic fabric finish
- Inc into front and back (IFB): A specific increase technique that creates two stitches from one stitch, allowing for precise shaping control
Stitches and Stitch Pattern Details
The pattern uses basic knit and purl stitches to construct the toy. The body begins with a cast-on of 30 stitches and progresses through a series of increases and decreases to create the pig's three-dimensional shape. Rows alternate between purl rows and knit rows with strategic increases and decreases, building the body from 30 stitches to a maximum of 42 stitches before being decreased back to 30 stitches. This structured shaping creates the pig's characteristic rounded body form.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for specific materials to complete the project:
- Yarn: 8 ply wool (equivalent to DK weight) in three colors: pink for the main body, white for details, and purple for accents. One skein of each color is required
- Needles: One pair of 3.25mm knitting needles (UK size 10, USA size 3), appropriately sized for 8 ply yarn
- Additional notions: The pattern includes buttons as embellishments, though a safety warning is provided regarding button size and age recommendations
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern notes that gauge does not significantly matter for this toy project, as small variations in finished size are acceptable and do not compromise the design. This flexibility makes the pattern forgiving for knitters still developing consistent tension control.
Safety Considerations
The pattern includes an important safety notice: due to the size of the buttons used as embellishments, this pattern is not recommended for children under 3 years of age. This consideration is essential for crafters making the toy as a gift for young children.
