This Is My Adventure Bag by It's Just A Yarn Thing
Project Overview
This Is My Adventure Bag is an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create a practical, circular shoulder bag. The finished bag measures approximately 9.5 inches in diameter and is constructed using worsted weight yarn with a decorative button and shoulder strap for versatile carrying options.
What Is Being Made
A crocheted shoulder bag featuring a circular construction. The design incorporates a decorative button closure and a 2-inch decorative shoulder strap, making it suitable for carrying essentials while maintaining a finished, polished appearance. The bag's circular shape and compact size make it an ideal accessory for everyday use or travel.
Crochet Techniques Used
- Magic Circle/Ring: The foundation technique used to begin the bag with a seamless center, allowing for even, circular construction from the start
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): A textured stitch technique that creates dimensional detail by working around the post of stitches from previous rows
- Round-based construction: The bag is worked in continuous rounds rather than rows, building outward from the center
- Slip stitch joining: Used to connect rounds and create a cohesive, structured fabric
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): Foundation stitch for creating loops and spacing
- Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used throughout the bag, providing a medium-weight, dense fabric suitable for a structured bag
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): Decorative stitch creating textured surface interest
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and finishing edges
Materials Required
Yarn: Worsted weight #4 yarn. The pattern uses approximately 180 yards total. The designer used one skein of I Love This Yarn and recommends using three separate solid colors from leftover skeins, though any color combination is acceptable.
Hook: US Size I (5.5mm) crochet hook, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge.
Additional Materials: One decorative button (for closure), one 2-inch decorative shoulder strap, scissors, a stitch marker (optional), and a large needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches and 2 rows of half double crochet equaling 1 inch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the bag to reach its intended finished size of approximately 9.5 inches in diameter. Crocheters should swatch and adjust hook size as needed before beginning the project.
Pattern Notes
The pattern includes important construction notes: the chain-1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch, which affects stitch counting and pattern accuracy. The design utilizes abbreviations including Rnd (round), Rep (repeat), St(s) (stitch/stitches), Beg (beginning), and parentheses to indicate stitch counts for each round. Video tutorials are provided for the Magic Circle/Ring foundation and Front Post Double Crochet technique, supporting crocheters in executing these specialized stitches correctly.
