The Violet Fairy Amigurumi Doll

What is Being Made

The Violet Fairy is a crocheted amigurumi doll designed by Leanne Vickery, inspired by the "Herb Fairies" series by Kimberley Gallagher. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a finished doll measuring 30 cm (12 inches) tall. The design combines a crocheted body with embroidered facial features and wire-reinforced wings, making it a decorative doll suitable for display or as a handmade gift.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This project employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques, which involve crocheting pieces in the round and stuffing them to create three-dimensional forms. The doll is built using single crochet stitches as the primary stitch, worked in continuous rounds to form the body, head, limbs, and other components. The gauge is established at 6 single crochet stitches over 2.5 cm (1 inch), which helps ensure proper sizing and proportions for the finished doll.

The pattern requires working with multiple yarn weights and colors to create distinct sections of the fairy. The main body and head are constructed using 8 ply (DK weight) yarn, while finer details such as the flower accent utilize DK weight yarn for more delicate work. Embroidery cotton in black, white, and purple is used to add facial details including eyes, while red crochet cotton forms the lips.

Stitches Used

  • Single Crochet (sc) – the primary stitch used throughout the doll construction for creating the body, head, limbs, and other crocheted components
  • Embroidery stitches – applied after crocheting to define eyes and facial features using embroidery cotton

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for multiple yarn types and colors. The main body uses 4 Seasons Brighton Cotton blend 8 ply in mustard (colour #37) for skin tone. The skirt is crafted from 4 Seasons Marvel 8 Ply in Sage. The top utilizes Lincraft Imperial Yarn European Collection 8 ply in Purple. Floral accents are made with Lincraft DK in Lilac, while wings are constructed from 4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply in Lemon Sorbet. Hair is created using Lincraft DK in Chocolate. Fine details use embroidery cotton and 2 ply crochet cotton in black, white, purple, and red.

Hooks: The pattern requires three different hook sizes: 3.75 mm, 2.75 mm, and 1.30 mm, allowing for varied stitch sizes and tension control across different components of the doll.

Additional Tools and Supplies: Construction requires 12 gauge aluminium florist wire (preferably white, available from Spotlight) or florist tape as an alternative for creating structured wings. Wire cutters and pliers are necessary for shaping and securing the wire. Polyester stuffing fills the crocheted pieces to create the three-dimensional form. A tapestry needle and yarn needle are used for weaving in ends and assembling components. Fabric stiffener (Brand Stiffy from Spotlight) is applied to the wings to maintain their shape. Sharp scissors complete the tool kit.

Skill Level and Difficulty

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-component assembly and color changes. The intermediate classification reflects the need to work with multiple yarn weights, manage color transitions, embroider facial details, and incorporate wire elements into the finished piece.
