Product Description
This beanie has a beautiful amount of texture. I was inspired by the tree line in the mountains here in Canada, hence the name. Combine the stitches with some simple colour work and it really makes the hat pop. It's a great next step for someone who wants something a little more challenging than a beginner pattern.

The Timberline Beanie by Ocean Peak Designs
Project Overview
The Timberline Beanie is an intermediate-level crochet hat pattern designed by Jasmine Brackenbury at Ocean Peak Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern offers two distinct silhouettes—a fitted version and a slouchy version—allowing crafters to customize the finished look based on personal preference. Both versions feature a structured brim and a textured body, making this beanie suitable for various head sizes and style preferences.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a warm, wearable beanie hat with a defined brim and a main body section. The design includes two construction options: a fitted beanie with a finished band width of 8 inches, body width of 9 inches, and height of 8.5 inches, or a slouchy beanie with a band width of 8 inches, body width of 9 inches, and height of 10 inches. An optional pom pom can be added to the crown for additional embellishment.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Timberline Beanie employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to create its structure and texture. The pattern utilizes front post double crochet (FPdc) stitches to create dimensional texture, particularly in the Alpine Stitch used throughout the body. Crafters will also work with back loop only (BLO) construction to create defined edges and transitions between sections. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques (dc2tog—double crochet two together) to shape the crown of the hat and achieve the proper fit.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch): Used for foundation and turning chains
- Single crochet (sc): Forms the brim and creates a tight, structured edge
- Double crochet (dc): Comprises the main body of the beanie
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Front post double crochet (FPdc): Creates the Alpine Stitch texture pattern in the body
- Double crochet two together (dc2tog): Used for decreasing and shaping the crown
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Timberline Beanie is worked in worsted weight yarn (#4 weight), a versatile and widely available yarn category ideal for creating structured hats with good stitch definition. The pattern requires two colors of yarn, designated as Color A and Color B. For the fitted version, the sample used 67 meters (73 yards) of Color A for the brim and single crochet rows, and 85 meters (93 yards) of Color B for the body and double crochet sections. The slouchy version requires 69 meters (75 yards) of Color A and 101 meters (110 yards) of Color B. The sample was created using Montana Crochet yarn with a total yardage of 100 grams equaling 201 meters or 220 yards per 2-skein package.
Tools and Equipment Required
- Crochet hooks: H/5mm and I/5.5mm sizes
- Yarn needle: For weaving in ends
- Scissors: For cutting yarn
- Tape measure: For checking gauge and finished dimensions
- Pom pom (optional): For crown embellishment
Gauge and Construction Notes
The pattern specifies a gauge of 2 inches equaling 7 double crochet stitches and 7 rows of Alpine Stitch using the recommended hook size. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The beanie is constructed using a combination of single crochet and double crochet stitches, with the Alpine Stitch—created through front post double crochet techniques—forming the primary textural element of the body. The two-color construction creates visual interest by alternating colors between the brim section and the main body.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with post stitches, color changes, and shaping techniques. The inclusion of front post double crochet and decreasing methods requires familiarity with stitch manipulation beyond foundational single and double crochet.
