The Timber Beanie by Baahumble Crafts

What Is Being Made

The Timber Beanie is a beginner-friendly crochet hat designed by Stacie Humble of Baahumble Crafts. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a classic beanie in two yarn weight options, allowing crafters to choose between a super bulky or worsted weight construction based on their preferred finished size and yarn availability.

Crochet Techniques

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The beanie is worked in flat rows, back and forth, which means crafters will work on a piece of fabric that is then seamed or joined together. The pattern features a repeating stitch sequence that forms the main body of the hat. One of the key techniques involved is identifying and working with the right and wrong sides of the crocheted fabric, as the pattern creates a distinctly textured fabric with visible differences between sides.

The pattern allows for customization of the finished size by adjusting the width during construction. Crafters can repeat specific rows to increase width for larger head sizes or stop early to create a smaller fit, making this design adaptable to different wearers without requiring multiple pattern versions.

Stitches Used

The Timber Beanie pattern utilizes a repeating stitch pattern that is worked across multiple rows. While the specific stitch names are referenced within the pattern itself, the design relies on a consistent pattern repeat that creates texture and structure throughout the hat. The gauge information indicates the pattern repeat measures 4 inches square, with different stitch counts depending on yarn weight: 9 stitches for the super bulky version and 17 stitches for the worsted version.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Super Bulky Option: Approximately 90 yards of category 6 (super bulky) weight yarn with a 9mm crochet hook. This version produces a finished beanie measuring 9 inches tall by 10 inches wide, with a gauge of 6 rows by 9 stitches of the pattern repeat equaling 4 inches square.
  • Worsted Option: Approximately 180 yards of category 4 (worsted) weight yarn with a 6mm crochet hook. This version produces a finished beanie measuring 9 inches tall by 9.5 inches wide, with a gauge of 12 rows by 17 stitches of the pattern repeat equaling 4 inches square.

Additional Supplies Required

  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction progress
  • Scissors for cutting yarn
  • Tape measure for checking gauge and finished measurements
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the hat
  • Fur or yarn pom pom (optional) for embellishing the top of the finished beanie

Pattern Notes and Customization

The Timber Beanie pattern includes helpful guidance for adjusting the fit. The base pattern can be modified by continuing to repeat rows 3 and 4 to increase the width for larger head sizes, or by stopping at the desired width before completing the full number of rows for a smaller fit. This flexibility makes the pattern suitable for various head sizes without requiring separate pattern versions.

The finished fabric has a distinct right and wrong side, which is an important consideration when assembling and wearing the hat. The pattern provides clear final measurements for both yarn weight options, allowing crafters to plan ahead and ensure the finished beanie will fit appropriately.
