The Three Sisters

In The Three Sisters, Anton Chekhov recounted the fates of three women trying to find their place in life in a small town, but their path is not straightforward (dramatic play, remember?). With this shawl, three colors of yarn find their path, though it’s not straightforward, either.

This stripey shawl is starts at one corner and gradually increases to an asymmetrical triangle. Two colors ease into relaxing garter stitch – albeit with some zigzags – while a third evolves into a mesh lace for knitting and visual interest. A jagged edge represents the sisters’ difficult lives, the chevron at the top their desire to go back to Moscow.
