What is Being Made

The Spinster is a pair of knitted socks designed to showcase decorative cable patterns and an attractive heel. The socks feature prominent cables that run the length of the front and down the back, extending through the heel flap. This design is specifically created to display the heel beautifully when worn with backless clogs or similar open-backed footwear. The pattern comes in three finished sizes: Small (7" around), Medium (8" around), and Large (9" around), all measured unstretched.

Techniques Used

The Spinster employs several fundamental sock knitting techniques to create its finished structure. The socks are knit in the round, which creates seamless fabric ideal for comfortable footwear. Cable patterns are worked throughout the front and back of the sock, requiring careful stitch manipulation to create the twisted, rope-like texture characteristic of cables. The heel flap construction integrates the cable pattern, and the pattern uses standard sock shaping techniques including decreases for the heel turn and toe shaping. Gauge control is essential for proper fit, with the pattern requiring 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Spinster pattern calls for Neighborhood Fiber Company Studio Sock yarn, a high-performance sock yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool blended with 20% nylon. This blend provides durability, elasticity, and easy care—the superwash treatment allows machine washing, while the nylon reinforcement increases wear resistance in high-friction areas. The pattern requires 400 yards per 100 grams of yarn. The sample sock shown in the pattern was knit in the colorway Kalorama Circle.

Needles required are either a set of 5 double-pointed needles or two circular needles in US size 1 (2.5 mm), or whatever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch worked in the round. The yarn weight is suitable for both 3-ply and 4-ply constructions, making it versatile for various sock yarn bases.

The Spinster is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. The pattern's name, The Spinster, is a tribute to Spinster Yarns, a knitting community based in Baltimore that was the designer Corrine Walcher's very first knitting community experience. This personal connection adds meaningful context to the design.
