Product Description
This slouchy seed stitch beanie is the perfect winter accessory! It's knit in one piece without any seaming, and was specifically designed as a first project for knitters who are new to knitting in the round. For more advanced knitters, it's an awesome quick knit.
The suggested yarn is from We Are Knitters, and it uses less than one ball. If you wish to substitute the yarn it's very straightforward, any bulky weight wool yarn that knits up to the correct tension will work.
The pattern should fit most adult heads - unstretched, the band measures 25cm/9.5", and it stretches out to 35cm/13".
This beanie has a matching scarf pattern. If you knit the beanie first, you can use the leftover yarn to make the scarf a little longer.
The Slouchy Mushroom Beanie by Katrina Walser
What is Being Made
The Slouchy Mushroom Beanie is an intermediate-level knitted winter hat designed to keep wearers warm while maintaining a stylish, relaxed aesthetic. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a slouchy beanie with a finished band diameter of 25cm (9.5 inches) that stretches to 35cm (13 inches), fitting most adults comfortably. The beanie's design emphasizes the popular slouchy silhouette, which has become a go-to winter accessory for those seeking both functionality and contemporary style.
Design Background and Purpose
Katrina Walser developed this pattern while preparing to teach a workshop focused on knitting in the round. The designer intentionally created a pattern that balances accessibility with skill-building, avoiding unnecessary complexity so that students could concentrate on mastering circular knitting techniques rather than struggling with intricate stitch work. The pattern proved successful in the workshop setting and is now available as a downloadable PDF for independent knitters.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern emphasizes circular knitting as its primary technique, making it an excellent project for knitters looking to develop or refine their skills working in the round. The design incorporates fundamental knitting techniques that remain accessible to intermediate-level crafters, including basic increases and decreases that shape the beanie's structure and create its characteristic slouchy fit.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch - the foundational stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl stitch - incorporated for texture and visual interest
- Seed stitch - a four-row repeating pattern that creates the textured fabric and serves as the gauge measurement basis (13 stitches and 16 rows to 10cm)
- Basic increases and decreases - used to shape the crown and create the slouchy silhouette
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: We Are Knitters petite wool yarn in 100% Peruvian wool. One ball of approximately 105 meters (115 yards) is required to complete the beanie. The pictured sample was created in Lavender colorway.
Needles: The pattern requires 8mm (US 11) circular needles measuring at least 80cm (32 inches) in length, with 6.5mm (US 10.5) circular needles also needed for specific sections of the pattern.
Yarn Weight: This pattern uses chunky-weight yarn, which contributes to the quick knit time and the beanie's cozy, substantial feel.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 16 rows to 10cm (4 inches), measured over the four-row seed stitch pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished beanie meets the intended dimensions and fits properly.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knitting fundamentals and are ready to develop their circular knitting skills. The straightforward stitch combination of knit, purl, and basic shaping techniques makes it an ideal stepping stone for those advancing beyond beginner-level projects.
