What you'll need

Product Description

THE ROSE FAIRY knitting pattern is available as a PDF ONLY.

This blanket is knitted in 4 easy triangles and sewn together at the end. I would suggest blocking your pieces first.

All the stitches are easy and explained very clearly. There are plenty of photos for added guidance should it be needed.

I have used just over 300gms of Kind Cole Melody double knit yarn in the colour Candy on 5mm knitting needles. The finished size is approx 32x32ins/82x82 cms

The ribbon was a request as I rarely use it myself. It can twist and to help avoid this I have stitched it in place every few inches. Also it helps stop little fingers getting caught.

Please, please do not ask me for a posted paper pattern as the polite answer will always be no.

The Rose Fairy Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Rose Fairy is a baby blanket knitting pattern designed by Susan J Ward. This finished blanket measures approximately 32x32 inches (82x82 centimeters), making it an ideal size for a crib or lap blanket. The blanket is constructed using a unique four-triangle method, where individual triangular sections are knitted separately and then sewn together to create the complete square blanket.

Construction Technique

The blanket employs a modular construction approach that simplifies the knitting process. Rather than working the entire blanket as one large piece, this pattern breaks the project into four manageable triangular sections. This technique offers several advantages: it allows knitters to work with smaller sections at a time, reduces the number of stitches on the needle, and makes the project more portable. Once all four triangles are completed, they are sewn together at the edges to form the finished square blanket.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern incorporates a variety of knitting stitches and techniques to create texture and visual interest:

  • Yarn Round Needle (YRN) – A yarn over technique that wraps yarn around the needle at the start of every row, creating an extra stitch. These edge stitches serve the practical purpose of providing selvage stitches that are later used to sew the blanket sections together.
  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) – Fundamental stitches that form the base fabric of the blanket.
  • Slip Stitch (Sl 1) – Used to slip stitches from one needle to another without working them, often employed in decreasing techniques and edge finishing.
  • Pass Slipped Stitch Over (PSSO) – A left-leaning decrease technique where a slipped stitch is lifted and passed over the next stitch to decrease the stitch count.
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK) – Another left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches as if to knit, then inserting the left needle through the front of both stitches and knitting them together through the back loops.
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog) – A basic right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one.
  • Make Bobble (MB) – A decorative stitch technique that creates textured bobbles on the blanket surface. The bobble is made by working multiple stitches in a single stitch (K1 yarn round needle, K1 yarn round needle, K1), turning the work, purling across these stitches, turning again, then slipping four stitches and knitting the final stitch before passing the slipped stitches over the knit stitch to close the bobble.
  • Yarn Forward (Yfd) – A yarn over technique that brings the yarn forward between stitches to create decorative holes or lace elements.
  • Through Back Loops (TBL) – A technique that twists stitches by working through the back loop rather than the front, often used in decrease techniques to create specific stitch angles.

Materials Required

This baby blanket pattern calls for 300 to 320 grams of DK weight yarn (or equivalent). DK (double knitting) weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that knits at a moderate gauge, making it suitable for creating a soft, drape-friendly fabric ideal for a baby blanket. The pattern specifically recommends baby soft yarn, indicating that the yarn should be gentle and suitable for sensitive infant skin. The exact yardage will depend on the specific yarn chosen, as different DK weight yarns have varying yardage per gram.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses fundamental knitting stitches like knit and purl, the inclusion of techniques such as yarn overs, decreases (SSK and PSSO), and the decorative bobble stitch technique requires knitters to have solid foundational skills. The modular construction method, while helpful, also requires accurate shaping through strategic decreases to create properly formed triangles. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and following row-by-row instructions before beginning this project.
