The Riverdale Cowl by Aunt Janet's Designs
Project Overview
The Riverdale Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Janet Jameson. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished cowl—a circular neckwear piece—using chunky yarn held double throughout for added warmth and texture.
What Is Being Made
The Riverdale Cowl is a knitted cowl, a tubular accessory worn around the neck. The design features decorative stitch patterns and textural elements that make it both functional and visually interesting. The cowl is worked flat and then joined, creating a versatile piece suitable for various occasions and seasons depending on yarn color choice.
Construction and Techniques
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Double-Stranded Yarn: The yarn is held double throughout the entire project, which creates a thicker, more substantial fabric and reduces the number of rows needed to achieve the desired length.
- Cable Stitches: The pattern incorporates both Front Cable and Back Cable techniques, which involve crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like vertical lines in the fabric.
- Bobble Stitches: Bobbles are textured knit embellishments created by increasing into a single stitch and then decreasing back down, forming a three-dimensional bump on the fabric surface.
- Stitch Markers: The pattern recommends using stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and maintain alignment, particularly useful for managing the multiple stitch patterns occurring simultaneously.
Stitches Used
The Riverdale Cowl employs a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:
- Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forms the primary fabric structure.
- Purl (P): Purl stitches create reverse stockinette texture and define pattern boundaries.
- Ribbing: A knit-one, purl-one (K1, P1) ribbing pattern forms the end borders, creating an elastic edge that helps the cowl maintain its shape.
- Cable Stitches: Front Cable and Back Cable techniques create dimensional twisted effects within the body of the cowl.
- Bobble Stitches: Bobbles add textural interest and visual complexity to the design.
Pattern Structure
The cowl is constructed in three main sections. The pattern begins with an End Border worked over six rows using K1, P1 ribbing to create a finished edge. The Body of the Cowl follows, featuring a repeating pattern sequence that includes cable and bobble stitches arranged symmetrically across the width. The pattern uses chart notation alongside written instructions, allowing knitters to follow either method based on personal preference.
Materials Required
The Riverdale Cowl requires minimal materials, making it an accessible project:
- Yarn: 7 ounces of worsted weight yarn in any color of the knitter's choice. Since the yarn is held double throughout, the actual yardage used is approximately half of what a single strand would require.
- Needles: Size 11 (8.0mm) knitting needles, appropriately sized to work with the doubled worsted weight yarn and create the desired fabric density.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, The Riverdale Cowl is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle cable and bobble techniques. The combination of textured stitches and the need to manage multiple stitch patterns simultaneously makes this pattern more challenging than beginner projects but accessible to those with foundational knitting experience.
