Product Description

This hat is named the pearl hat because it is a great pattern to practice your purl stitches! I designed this hat pattern when I was knitting up a stocking stitch sweater. I felt like I was spending the majority of my time purling as I was very slow at the purl stitch and so wanted to design a quick, easy pattern to practice it. The pattern is written for two sizes, adult and a 6-12 months baby. I made both sizes, topped with faux fur pom-poms and gifted them as a mummy and baby set for a friend, so they really do make the perfect present. I hope you like the pattern as much as I liked designing it for you!

The Pearl Hat by Lucy Hancock

What is Being Made

The Pearl Hat is a knitted beanie designed in two sizes: baby and adult. This is a beginner-friendly hat project that emphasizes purl stitch practice while creating a wearable, functional garment. The hat features a classic construction with a ribbed brim and a textured main body, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to build confidence with fundamental stitching techniques.

Design Inspiration and Purpose

Lucy Hancock designed The Pearl Hat as a focused practice project after learning the purl stitch. The designer wanted a smaller, quicker project to improve purl stitch speed and consistency, rather than committing to a large garment like a jumper where extensive purling could feel tedious. This intentional design approach makes the hat an excellent educational tool for developing core knitting skills.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Pearl Hat employs two primary stitch patterns to create visual interest and practice opportunities:

  • 1x1 Rib Stitch Brim: The hat begins with a 1x1 ribbed edge, which creates elasticity and a neat, finished appearance. This alternating knit and purl pattern helps the brim fit snugly around the head.
  • Purl Stitch Main Body: The primary body of the hat is worked in purl stitch, allowing knitters to develop proficiency and speed with this essential technique. The repetitive nature of the purl stitch creates a subtle, textured fabric.

The pattern uses long tail cast on to begin the project, a foundational cast-on method that provides a sturdy, flexible edge ideal for ribbed sections.

Yarn and Materials

The Pearl Hat is constructed using super chunky weight yarn, which contributes to the hat's quick knitting time and natural stretch. The pattern calls for two coordinating colors of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick:

  • Yarn A: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Cranberry (or chosen brim colour)
  • Yarn B: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Fisherman (or chosen colour)

The use of two yarn colors allows for creative color blocking, with one color forming the ribbed brim and the other creating the purl stitch body. Knitters can select alternative colors based on personal preference.

Tools and Notions Required

  • Circular Knitting Needles: US Size 15 / 10mm (circular needles accommodate the hat's circumference and allow for seamless in-the-round knitting)
  • Scissors for yarn finishing
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Stitch marker for tracking rounds
  • Pom-pom (optional embellishment)

Project Characteristics

The Pearl Hat is notable for its super quick construction time, thanks to the combination of super chunky yarn and straightforward stitch patterns. The finished hat is super stretchy, providing comfortable fit across the two size options (baby and adult). The pattern is written with the baby size as the primary instruction, with adult sizing provided in parentheses throughout, allowing knitters to easily customize the project to their intended recipient.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner project, The Pearl Hat is accessible to knitters with basic knowledge of fundamental stitches. While the pattern assumes familiarity with knit and purl stitches, cast-on methods, and basic shaping, it provides an excellent opportunity to build speed and confidence with these core techniques in a manageable, rewarding project.
