Product Description
A simple, cozy aran weight design incorporating slipped stitches to give texture. The finished cowl measures 20cm by 56cm. I used just short of 2 50g skeins of Woolyknit aran. Different sizing could be achieved by reducing or increasing the number of rounds. The pattern is suitable for men and women and is sized to fit any adult or teenager.
The Nickleby Cowl by Samantha Webb
What Is Being Made
The Nickleby Cowl is a beginner-friendly knitted neck cowl designed to provide warmth and style. This cosy accessory measures 20cm by 56cm when completed, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a straightforward yet satisfying make. The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless tubular construction that sits comfortably around the neck.
Knitting Techniques
This design incorporates several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner knitters. The cowl begins with a ribbed cuff worked in 1x1 rib, which provides elasticity and a neat finished edge. The main body features slipped stitches to create subtle texture and visual interest throughout the fabric. The pattern uses yarn over increases to shape the design, and the slipped stitches are worked purlwise to maintain consistency and prevent twisting. The cowl is constructed in the round from a cast-on base, requiring careful attention to ensure stitches are not twisted before joining.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Rib: Alternating knit and purl stitches worked for the opening edge to create stretch and recovery
- Slipped Stitches (S1pw): Stitches slipped purlwise to add textural detail without increasing stitch count
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the main fabric
- Yarn Over (Yo): Creates intentional increases and decorative eyelets within the pattern
- Pass Slipped Stitch Over (Psso): Used in combination with slipped stitches to create decreases and texture
Materials and Specifications
The Nickleby Cowl requires 100g of aran weight yarn, approximately 154 metres in length. The sample photographed in the pattern was knitted using Woolyknits aran, a 100% British wool yarn in grey. A 4mm circular needle measuring 60cm in length is required to accommodate the cast-on stitches comfortably. Additional materials include stitch markers to denote the beginning of round and an embroidery needle for weaving in yarn ends. The pattern recommends a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 10cm in the main stitch pattern. Note that variations in yarn weight and needle size may alter both the finished dimensions and the quality of the fabric texture.
Pattern Notes
The cowl is cast on with 126 stitches and worked entirely in the round. The construction begins with 5 rounds of 1x1 rib to create the neckline edge, followed by the textured main body incorporating slipped stitches and yarn overs. This beginner-level project combines basic techniques in a straightforward sequence, making it an accessible introduction to circular needle knitting and textured stitch work.
