The Heartland Collection by Jo Sharp

Overview

The Heartland Collection features knitted designs created by independent designer Jo Sharp, showcasing classic knitwear patterns worked in DK weight yarn. This collection includes sweaters and jumpers alongside coordinating doll and doll accessories, offering intermediate-level knitting projects suitable for crafters with foundational skills.

Primary Project: Heartland Sweater

The Heartland Sweater is the signature piece in this collection, designed as a classic pullover garment constructed using traditional knitting techniques. This intermediate-level project demonstrates structured garment construction and shaping methods appropriate for knitters ready to advance beyond basic projects.

Knitting Techniques and Methods

The Heartland Sweater employs several essential knitting techniques to create its finished structure:

  • Stocking Stitch: The primary fabric construction method, creating the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of traditional knitwear
  • Increases: Multiple increase methods are utilized, including Kfb (knit into front and back of stitch), m1 (make 1 by picking up the loop between stitches and knitting into the back), and Pbf (purl into back and front of stitch) for shaping garment pieces
  • Decreases: Structured decreasing techniques including skpsso (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) for refined shaping and seam lines
  • Cable Work: Cable needle techniques are incorporated into the design, adding textural interest and visual depth to the sweater
  • Slip Stitches: Slip stitch techniques, including through-the-back-of-loop variations, are employed for specific construction details

Essential Stitches

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches as building blocks:

  • Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
  • Purl (P): The complementary purl stitch used for textural variation and reverse stockinette sections
  • Yarn Overs (yrn): Yarn round needle techniques creating decorative eyelets or lace elements
  • Cable Stitches: Worked using a cable needle to create twisted, three-dimensional texture

Materials and Construction

The Heartland Sweater is designed specifically for Jo Sharp Classic DK Wool, a double knit weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape for fitted garments. DK weight yarn works at a medium gauge, allowing for detailed stitch work while maintaining reasonable project completion time. Standard knitting needles appropriate to DK yarn weight are required, along with a cable needle for cable pattern sections.

Collection Scope

Beyond the primary Heartland Sweater, this collection extends to include coordinating sweaters and jumpers, as well as knitted doll accessories and doll garments. These complementary pieces allow crafters to develop a cohesive wardrobe of projects or create coordinated pieces for dolls using the same techniques and yarn weight.

Skill Level and Format

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Heartland Collection is designed for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and simple garment construction. The collection is provided as a downloadable PDF format, making patterns immediately accessible for digital reference during knitting. The PDF includes comprehensive knitting and crochet abbreviations for clear pattern reading, supporting knitters through each step of construction.
