The Handmaids Tale Praise Be Knitted Decoration

Project Overview

The Handmaids Tale Praise Be is a beginner-friendly knitted decoration design by Pretty Little Sheep. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a thematic ornament or decorative piece inspired by the iconic imagery from The Handmaid's Tale. The project combines multiple knitted components to form a complete three-dimensional decoration suitable for display or gifting.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a multi-part knitted decoration consisting of a stuffed body, a scarf element, and wings or hat component. The finished piece represents a character-inspired figure with distinct colored sections that build dimension and visual interest. The decoration is designed as a small, portable craft project ideal for fans of the source material or as a unique handmade gift.

Body Construction

The body begins with a cast-on of 8 stitches using red DK yarn. The knitter works through a series of increases using the kfb (knit forward and back) technique to expand the piece from 8 stitches to 16, then 24, and finally 32 stitches. After reaching the maximum width, the pattern transitions into stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) for approximately 25 rows, creating the main body depth. The piece is then shaped downward through a series of decreases using k2tog (knit two stitches together) and p2tog (purl two stitches together) techniques, systematically reducing from 32 stitches down to 4 stitches for closure.

Scarf Element

The scarf is constructed using dark red DK yarn with an icord technique. The knitter casts on 5 stitches and works the icord for 70 rows, creating a long, tubular cord element. This component adds visual detail and textural variety to the finished decoration.

Wings or Hat Component

The pattern includes a wings or hat section, though complete instructions for this component are not fully detailed in the provided excerpt. This element would complete the character representation and add dimensional interest to the overall piece.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Cast on: Foundation technique to create initial stitches on the needle
  • Knit (K): Basic stitch creating the primary fabric texture
  • Purl (P): Reverse of the knit stitch, used in stocking stitch construction
  • Kfb (knit forward and back): Increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to expand the body width
  • K2tog (knit two stitches together): Decrease technique that combines two stitches into one, used to shape the body closure
  • P2tog (purl two stitches together): Decrease technique on wrong-side rows for shaping
  • Stocking stitch (St st): Fundamental fabric pattern created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the smooth, classic knit appearance
  • Icord: Tubular knitting technique used for the scarf, creating a cord-like structure
  • Mattress stitch: Seaming technique used to join the body pieces together with an invisible seam

Materials Required

This beginner project requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors: red for the main body, white for accent details, flesh tone for facial features, and dark red for the scarf and additional components. The pattern calls for 3mm straight needles appropriate for DK yarn weight. Additional materials include toy stuffing for filling the body to create dimension and structure, a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in yarn ends, and scissors for cutting yarn. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to print or reference the pattern digitally while working.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner project, this decoration is accessible to knitters new to the craft. The pattern uses fundamental techniques including basic stitches, simple increases and decreases, and straightforward seaming. The small scale of the project and limited color changes make it an ideal introduction to multi-colored knitting and three-dimensional construction without overwhelming complexity.
