Product Description

I like shawls but most of them I like to use as a scarf or as a kerchief, or a wrap around the neck, but very less as exactly traditional shawl. And in this case it’s nice and more practically if the shawl is longer on the sides and shorter in the middle. So that’s why I designed The Fragile shawl. Do you ask yourself why Fragile? Because it looks like glass leaves, subtle and fragile. The Fragile shawl is shown in Double Soft Merino , in natural white colour way. I used needles US7 / metric 4,5mm and 440 m /481 yd (4 skeins) of yarn. GAUGE loose gauge (check the pictures 1 and 2 below in pattern) SIZE Laying flat, blocked: Wingspan: 270cm /106.29’’ Depth: 55 cm / 21.65’’.

The Fragile Shawl by Sailor Wife Knits

What Is Being Made

The Fragile shawl is a versatile knitted wrap designed by independent designer Sailor Wife Knits. This design prioritizes wearability as a neckwear piece—functioning as a scarf, kerchief, or neck wrap rather than a traditional triangular shawl. The construction features longer sides with a shorter center section, making it ideal for draping around the shoulders and neck. The shawl's aesthetic draws inspiration from delicate glass leaves, with subtle, fragile visual qualities that give the design its distinctive character.

Construction and Design Flexibility

The Fragile shawl offers exceptional flexibility in construction, allowing knitters to customize the finished piece according to personal preferences. The pattern provides complete freedom in yarn selection, needle size, and final dimensions. Knitters can choose their preferred finished size and work the pattern to those specifications, making this design adaptable to various yarn quantities and weights.

Yarn and Materials

The featured sample shown in the pattern uses Double Soft Merino from Knitting for Olive, a fingering-weight yarn (110 m per 50 gr). The shawl requires 440 meters or 481 yards total, which equals 4 skeins of the recommended yarn. The pattern calls for circular needles in US 7 / metric 4.5mm for the featured version.

Yarn Weight and Needle Size Recommendations

While the pattern is shown in DK weight yarn, The Fragile shawl is designed to accommodate a wide range of yarn weights. The designer recommends using yarns that begin at needle size US 5 / 3.75mm and extend up to US 17 / 12mm. This broad range allows knitters to work with fingering-weight, sport-weight, DK-weight, worsted-weight, and bulky-weight yarns, provided they select appropriate needle sizes for their chosen yarn.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Fragile shawl is classified as an intermediate-level knitting project. While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided content, the shawl's design emphasizes the delicate, glass-leaf aesthetic through its construction. The pattern uses circular needles and is worked in a way that creates the characteristic longer-sided silhouette suited for neck wrapping.

Skill Level and Suitability

This pattern is appropriate for intermediate knitters who have foundational skills and are ready to work with more complex shaping or stitch patterns. The design's flexibility makes it an excellent project for knitters looking to explore how different yarn weights and needle sizes affect the final garment while working from a single pattern.
