Product Description

Say hello to the Fluff Family! Dusty and Floss and dustmite Fuzz. Amigurumi creatures with knitted 'dustbag' and 'dustjacket'. Dusty was originally made from the dust and fluff that gathers around the house...you know the stuff...the balls of fluff that you find under cupboards and beds where its quiet. He came into my life with his cute smiley face and made me smile too. You can see more about the life and times of Dusty and Floss here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/polly-jane/8675405194/in/set-72157625594744063/

You will need some DK (worsted) yarn for Dusty, Floss and Fuzz, 4 ply (fingering) for the jacket and DK (worsted) acrylic yarn for the dustbag. I have some 'Dusty' yarn available in my etsy shop www.polly.etsy.com and for all 'Dusty' yarn purchases I will send a FREE ball of yarn for the dustbag. You will need a 3mm hook and 2.75mm knitting needles. I used some fine mohair yarn (also some is available in the shop- its what I used to knit the original Dusty sweaters with)

What Is Being Made

The Fluff Family is a collection of adorable amigurumi crochet toys designed by Polly. This downloadable PDF pattern includes instructions for creating Dusty and Floss, charming fuzz and dust mite characters that form part of a larger amigurumi creature family. These handmade toys are perfect for gift-giving, nursery decoration, or personal collection, and can be customized with different yarn colors and types to create unique variations of each character.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The Fluff Family patterns utilize fundamental amigurumi construction techniques that are well-suited for intermediate crocheters. The designs begin with a magic ring or chain foundation at the top of the head, then progress through a series of increasing and decreasing rounds to create the three-dimensional spherical shapes characteristic of amigurumi toys. The construction method involves working in continuous rounds with slip stitches to join, building the head and body pieces that are later assembled together. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases (working multiple stitches into single stitches) and decreases to form the rounded, plush appearance typical of the amigurumi style.

Stitches Used

This pattern employs a variety of fundamental crochet stitches to create texture and structure. The primary stitches include:

  • Chain (ch) - used for foundation and turning chains
  • Single crochet (sc) - the basic stitch for tight, dense fabric
  • Half double crochet (hdc) - provides medium height and density
  • Double crochet (dc) - creates taller stitches for varied texture
  • Half treble (htr) - adds height and openness where needed
  • Treble (tr) - taller stitch for specific shaping
  • Triple crochet (trc) - extra-tall stitch for particular design elements
  • Double treble (dtr) - the tallest stitch in the pattern
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - used to join rounds and create seamless connections

The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology with US equivalents provided in brackets, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with either convention.

Materials Required

To complete the Fluff Family amigurumi creatures, you will need the following materials:

  • 3mm crochet hook - the specified size for achieving proper gauge and fabric density
  • Double knit weight yarn (UK) or worsted weight yarn (US) - the primary yarn for constructing the main body pieces. The pattern notes that Lana Grossa Estivo was used for Dusty, though crafters are encouraged to experiment with different yarn brands and colors to create personalized variations
  • Fuzzy yarn - a specialty yarn used specifically for creating hair details that give the Fluff creatures their characteristic fluffy appearance
  • 4-hole buttons - used for embellishing and adding character details to the finished toys
  • Thread for embroidering - used to hand-stitch mouths and other facial features onto the completed amigurumi
  • Thread for sewing - required for attaching eyes and assembling the various crocheted pieces together into the finished creature

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate project, The Fluff Family patterns are suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with increases, decreases, and shaping techniques. The amigurumi construction method requires understanding how to work in continuous rounds and maintain consistent tension to achieve the proper spherical shapes. While not a beginner project, the patterns provide clear abbreviations and step-by-step instructions that guide crafters through each round of construction.
