Product Description
This is a Pattern for a Beautiful Tea pot cosy in 4 sizes. The cosy is worked in 2 pieces until they reach a specific hight and then worked together in rounds for the top. The Flower design is worked in Swiss Darning (Duplicate stitch). A few beginner steps are included in the pattern.
My patterns are all in German and English.
My patterns are all created by myself which I really enjoy. It takes a while to create a pattern, knit it and write everything down but if there are any issues please do not hesitate to send me a message either here or on my Instagram account _Lovelyyarns.
The Flower Tea Cosy by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
The Flower Tea Cosy is a knitted teapot cover designed to fit four different pot sizes, accommodating 2-cup, 4-cup, 6-cup, and 8-cup teapots. The cosy measures approximately 18 to 26 centimeters in width and 18 to 24 centimeters in height, depending on the selected size. This practical kitchen accessory combines functionality with decorative appeal through its floral design element.
Construction Technique
This tea cosy is constructed using a two-piece method that transitions into circular knitting. The knitter works two separate pieces until they reach a specified height, then joins them together to work the top section in the round. This hybrid construction approach allows for shaping the cosy to fit the teapot body while creating a seamless top opening. The pattern includes beginner-friendly guidance to support knitters new to this technique.
Stitches and Embellishment
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation. The distinctive floral design is created using Swiss Darning, also known as duplicate stitch, which is an embroidery technique worked over completed knitting. This method allows for intricate colorwork without the complexity of traditional stranded knitting, making it accessible for beginners. The Swiss Darning is executed using embroidery threads in multiple colors, applied after the main knitting is complete.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 50 to 80 grams of DK weight yarn, depending on size selection
- Needles: 3 millimeter double-pointed needles and circular needles for the transition from flat to in-the-round knitting
- Additional Supplies: A stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, and embroidery threads in six strands in various colors for the Swiss Darning embellishment
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 32 rows when working with 3 millimeter needles in DK yarn. This gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. Four size options are provided, allowing customization based on teapot dimensions: the smallest fits 2-cup pots while the largest accommodates 8-cup pots.
Skill Level
Designed as a beginner project, The Flower Tea Cosy includes instructional steps for foundational techniques. The pattern recommends using an elastic cast-on method or a larger needle for the cast-on edge to ensure it remains flexible and not overly tight. Cast-off instructions direct the knitter to work stitches as they appear, using either knit or purl stitches accordingly.
