Product Description
The Feral Shawl is a half pi shawl, knit back and forth from the bottom edge toward the top center. I knit the sample using my own heavy worsted weight handspun yarn made from a Jacob sheep fleece that was machine carded to blend the light and dark fibers of the spotted rare breed. Spun at 10 wraps per inch, the 2ply semi-woolen spun yarn is of a medium fiber that is strong, lustrous, and soft.
The Feral Shawl by Taylor Owen
What Is Being Made
The Feral Shawl is a half pi shawl designed by Taylor Owen and published by Thread to Mend Knits. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant lace shawl with rustic construction that evokes the appearance of a wild animal. The shawl is knit back and forth from the bottom edge toward the top center, making it an accessible project for knitters seeking a sophisticated accessory with organic, natural styling.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level shawl employs half pi shawl construction, a geometric approach that creates a dramatic triangular or crescent shape. The pattern is worked directionally from the cast-on edge upward, allowing knitters to adjust the final size by continuing to work additional rows before binding off at the top center point. The combination of elegant lace elements with rustic construction techniques creates visual interest and texture throughout the piece.
Stitches Used
The Feral Shawl features lace stitching as a primary design element. The specific stitch patterns contribute to the elegant aesthetic while maintaining the rustic character that inspired the design. The interplay between lace and stockinette sections creates the wild, organic appearance that gives the shawl its distinctive name and visual appeal.
Yarn and Materials
Suggested Yarn Weight: Heavy Worsted or Aran weight
Yardage Required: Approximately 700+ yards from 350g of yarn
The pattern sample was knit using Taylor Owen's own heavy worsted weight handspun yarn created from Jacob sheep fleece. The fleece was machine carded to blend the naturally light and dark fibers characteristic of this spotted rare breed. Spun at 10 wraps per inch as a 2ply semi-woolen spun yarn, this medium-fiber yarn offers strength, luster, and softness. The heather coloring of the Jacob wool—reminiscent of grey tabby and tortoiseshell cats—provides elegant color variation.
Alternative Yarn Options:
- Stone Wool (4 skeins, 100g / 200 yards per skein)
- Fancy Tiger Crafts Heirloom (4 skeins, 112g / 200 yards per skein)
- Elsa Wool Worsted Spun Cormo Worsted (4 skeins, 113g / 217 yards per skein)
- Abundant Earth Fiber (yardage and weight specifications continued in full pattern)
Knitters can work with Aran, DK, Heavy Worsted, or Worsted weight yarns, providing flexibility for yarn selection based on personal preference and stash availability. Standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required to complete this project.
Design Inspiration
Taylor Owen drew inspiration for The Feral Shawl from the animals in her care—both domestic cats living in her home and the community cats of her alley. The elegant yet untamed aesthetic of the lace pattern and rustic construction mirrors the independent spirit and natural beauty of these feline companions, resulting in a shawl that balances refinement with wild, organic appeal.
