Product Description

This lightweight triangular shawl incorporates two distinct Japanese lace stitches. It is knit from the top down, and the stitches cause a pretty and delicate scallop at the neckline. While the shawl looks difficult to knit, it is not hard, and is suitable for intermediate knitters.

The finished pattern measures 82 inches wide across the top, and is 34 inches at the deepest point. There are also instructions for an optional crochet edging and optional tassels

The stitches are charted out and written out line by line.

Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming some cable lace experience)

Any light weight fingering yarn will work for this shawl. No crochet hooks needed if you don't wish to edge this shawl

The Catskills Lace Cuneate Shawl by Linda Lehman

What is Being Made

The Catskills Lace Cuneate is a lightweight knitted shawl designed as an isosceles cuneate wrap. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a wearable garment suitable for layering and everyday wear, with a construction that produces a mock cable and lace effect throughout the piece.

Craft and Techniques

This project is a knitting pattern that incorporates Japanese-inspired stitch techniques to create both decorative lace work and subtle cable effects. The design is classified as Beginner + to Intermediate level, assuming knitters have foundational knowledge of basic knitting and purling techniques, lace work construction, and cable knitting methods. The pattern demonstrates how traditional Japanese stitches can be combined to produce a lightweight, elegant finished garment.

Stitches Used

The Catskills Lace Cuneate features two primary stitches, both originating from Japanese knitting traditions. These stitches work together to create a mock cable effect paired with lace patterning throughout the shawl. The combination of these techniques produces an open, airy fabric suitable for a lightweight wrap.

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn: 1000 to 1200 yards of lightweight fingering weight yarn (4-ply)
  • Needles: U.S. Size #5 (3.5mm) needles with at least a 32-inch cable length
  • Additional Supplies: Stitch markers (optional), row counter (optional), and darning needle for finishing
  • Gauge: Approximately 5.5 stitches per inch and 8½ rows per inch in either lace stitch pattern when moderately blocked

Pattern Notes

The designer notes that while gauge is provided as a reference, it is not critically important to match exactly. However, variations in gauge will affect the final sizing and yarn yardage requirements. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size if necessary to achieve the specified gauge for predictable results. The finished size specifications are included in the complete downloadable pattern.
