Product Description

What was I thinking? I must have been crazy! Three years ago it seemed so far away – I felt the day would never come and so agreed recklessly with her plan.

“Of course you can study abroad! What a great idea! As long as your grades are good and you stay under what we budgeted for your college expenses – why not? When you’re a Junior!” A mother’s bargaining, bartering, bribing…

It had worked countless times in the past: “Of course you can have that cookie – as long as you eat your vegetables first like a good girl!”

But the years have flown by and now my good girl is hurtling through space at 35,000 feet somewhere over Spain, on her way to Australia, of all places - the other side of the world! – to a strange land filled with people she doesn’t even know. And I am worrying about my baby so far from home. Somehow I was not expecting to miss her so much…

But something else surprised me. She walked into the kitchen this morning before we l

What Is Being Made

The Aussie Cowl is a knitted cowl neck accessory designed as a beginner-friendly project. This cylindrical neck warmer measures approximately 16 inches wide and 50 inches around, making it a versatile piece suitable for wearing, gifting, or selling as a finished handmade item.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The cowl is constructed using the garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This simple, repetitive stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric that lies flat and has excellent drape for a neck cowl. The pattern incorporates color changes throughout the construction, requiring knitters to switch between three distinct yarn colors in a planned sequence. The cowl is worked in the round using a flat construction method, meaning it is knitted flat and then seamed together. The final step involves seaming, where Row 1 is sewn to the last row to create the circular cowl shape, and weaving in ends to finish the piece neatly.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the entire cowl, created by knitting every row to produce a bumpy, textured fabric
  • Cast On: Used to create the initial 40 stitches at the beginning of the project
  • Bind Off: Applied on the final row to secure stitches and complete the knitting
  • Seaming: Used to join Row 1 to the last row, forming the cowl into a circle

Materials and Tools

The Aussie Cowl requires Size 8 knitting needles and worsted weight yarn in three colors. The pattern calls for approximately 200 yards of each color, totaling 600 yards of yarn. The three colors used are Teal, Orange, and Cranberry, creating a vibrant, multi-colored striped effect. Worsted weight yarn is a medium-weight yarn that works well with Size 8 needles and creates a fabric with good structure and drape suitable for a cowl accessory.

Pattern Structure and Color Work

The Aussie Cowl features a distinctive color-blocking design organized into three main sections. Each section is 24 rows of a primary color, followed by a repeating stripe pattern of 2 rows in a secondary color alternating with 2 rows of the primary color, repeated 5 times. The pattern is then repeated three times in total, creating a symmetrical, multi-colored cowl. This structured approach to color changes makes the pattern easy to follow for beginners while producing a visually striking finished piece.
