Product Description
The Amelia Raglan!
This is a written crochet pattern for a top-down, seamless (NO SEWING!), raglan style sweater made using Yarnspirations Caron Big Cakes. Other worsted/aran yarns may be used to create this beauty but PLEASE check gauge before getting started!
Written in US terminology, this pattern is considered to be an intermediate level but I think an advanced beginner could figure it out.
You can modify the length as well as the sleeves as it suits you. It’s very easy to customize. Add some extra rows and pop this on over a pair of comfy leggings!
You are absolutely welcome to sell any item you make from this pattern, but please do not redistribute or sell the pattern itself or use the photos without permission. Please give pattern credit to evolvecrochet when posting on social media and Etsy.
The Amelia Raglan by Colleen Webster
What is Being Made
The Amelia Raglan is an intermediate-level crochet sweater designed by Colleen Webster. This pullover garment features a classic raglan sleeve construction, where the sleeves are set into the body with diagonal seams running from the underarm to the neckline. The sweater is available in seven sizes ranging from XS (28"-30" bust) to 3XL (52"-54" bust), making it accessible for a wide range of body types. The garment is worked from the top down, a popular construction method that allows for easy customization of length and fit as you work.
Yarn and Materials
The Amelia Raglan is designed to be made using worsted weight yarn in the aran and heavy worsted categories. The pattern calls for 2-3 skeins of Caron Big Cakes or similar worsted weight (4) yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size: XS requires approximately 800 yards, while the largest size (3XL) requires approximately 1,550 yards. A K hook (6.5mm) or any hook that achieves the correct gauge is recommended. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, a measuring tape for checking dimensions, and an optional stitch marker to mark the first stitch of torso rows.
Gauge and Sizing Information
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this pattern. The target gauge is 11 stitches by 9 rows measuring 4 inches, worked using the alternating stitch pattern described in the instructions (alternating 1 row of double crochet with 1 row of single crochet). The sweater is sized to accommodate various bust measurements and armhole depths, with lengths ranging from approximately 23 inches for the XS size to 31 inches for the 3XL size, measured from the top of the shoulder without the finishing band.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
The Amelia Raglan employs several fundamental crochet stitches and techniques that are essential to completing the garment:
- Single Crochet (SC): A basic short stitch used throughout the pattern, often worked in alternating rows with double crochet to create the fabric texture.
- Double Crochet (DC): A taller stitch that creates more drape and is alternated with single crochet rows to establish the pattern's stitch gauge.
- Slip Stitch (Sl St): Used to join rounds or move yarn across stitches without adding height.
- Back Loop Only (BLO): A technique where you work only into the back loop of a stitch, creating a ribbed or textured effect.
- Front Loop Only (FLO): The complementary technique where you work only into the front loop of a stitch.
- Back Bumps: A specialized technique that involves working into the unused loops at the base of stitches from a previous row, creating additional texture and structure. The pattern references photos and YouTube tutorials for visual guidance on this technique.
- Corner Stitches: Both SC Corner (SC, ch 2, SC in same stitch) and DC Corner (DC, ch 2, DC in same stitch) are used to create neat, shaped corners throughout the garment.
- DC2TOG (Double Crochet 2 Together): A decrease stitch that combines two double crochets into one, used to shape the raglan sleeves and adjust stitch counts as needed.
Construction Method and Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate-level pattern, The Amelia Raglan requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow written instructions with stitch abbreviations. The top-down raglan construction method is a hallmark of modern crochet garment design, offering the advantage of trying on the sweater as you work and adjusting the length to your preference. The pattern incorporates shaping techniques such as increases and decreases to create the proper fit through the bust and armholes, making this an excellent project for crocheters looking to expand their garment-making skills beyond basic scarves and blankets.
