Thanksgiving and Christmas Turkey Afghan Square
What is Being Made
This is a decorative crochet square designed for holiday afghans, featuring a festive turkey motif perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. The finished square measures 6 x 6 inches (15.4 x 15.4 cm), making it an ideal component for larger blanket projects or standalone decorative pieces. The design allows crafters to create multiple squares and join them together to form complete afghans with a cohesive holiday theme.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This pattern utilizes fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters with basic to intermediate skills. The primary stitch structure relies on treble stitches and double crochet stitches, with a gauge of 4 tr/dc stitches per 1 inch (2.5 cm). The pattern employs color work and stitch variation to create the turkey design, incorporating multiple yarn colors to define different elements of the bird. The square construction method allows for straightforward assembly and blocking to achieve consistent sizing across multiple squares.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This project uses DK weight yarn (8ply / yarn weight #3), which is a versatile medium weight ideal for creating fabric with good drape and definition. The pattern requires small quantities of yarn:
- Cream DK yarn: 3 grams for the primary background
- Dark brown DK yarn: 2 grams for turkey body definition
- Autumnal variegated or orange DK yarn: 2 grams for accent colors and turkey features
- Scrap yarn: Sandy brown, yellow, black, and red for detailed elements such as the turkey's head, beak, wattle, and feather highlights
Hooks and Tools
The pattern calls for two crochet hook sizes to achieve proper stitch definition and fabric consistency. A 4 mm (US size G) hook serves as the primary hook for most stitching, while a 2.75 mm (US size C) hook is used for more delicate or detailed work. A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends and assembling the finished square.
Pattern Notes
The pattern is designed by Heather C Gibbs and is intended for personal use. Finished items may be donated, gifted, or sold by individual crafters, provided appropriate credit is given to the designer. The measurements provided are approximations, and actual finished sizes may vary slightly depending on individual gauge and tension. While the pattern is optimized for DK weight yarn with the specified hook sizes, it can be adapted to work with other yarn weights, though this will affect both the gauge and the final dimensions of the completed square.
