Product Description

This is a fun knit if you like fair isle and a very comfy hat that will barely give you hat-head, unless you have an unusually large brain--or a lot of hair!

I got the idea for the elephants from a tapestry hanging in my favorite thai restaurant. Used about 1/2 ball of the Debbie Bliss for the gray elephant and leftovers from my seemingly neverending stash of Cascade 220 wool. Yum!

Thai Elephant Hat by Andrea Marquis

What is Being Made

The Thai Elephant Hat is an advanced-level knitted hat designed by Andrea Marquis. This project creates a structured, decorative hat featuring elephant-inspired patterning and colorwork. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, resulting in a seamless construction suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and visually striking accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that elevate it beyond basic hat construction. The hat begins with a Crossover Join method, as detailed by Ann Budd's directions, which creates a secure and invisible join when working in the round. This technique involves strategically exchanging the first and last cast-on stitches to eliminate the typical seam line found in circular knitting.

The pattern incorporates cable knitting to create textured elements throughout the design. Cable stitches are worked by moving stitches to a cable needle, knitting subsequent stitches, then knitting the held stitches, which creates the characteristic twisted, rope-like appearance. The colorwork aspect of the hat requires managing multiple yarn colors across rounds, adding complexity to the construction process.

Stitches Used

The Thai Elephant Hat utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic patterns:

  • Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch creating the fabric base
  • Purl stitch (P) – used for textural contrast and ribbing elements
  • Cable stitches – created by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle to produce dimensional, twisted effects

The stitch pattern follows a repeating sequence: Rounds 1-3 alternate knit and purl stitches in groups of four, creating a ribbed texture. Round 4 introduces cable crossovers worked every eight stitches, establishing the pattern repeat that defines the hat's visual character.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern requires worsted weight yarn, specifically combining two premium yarn brands for optimal results. The designer specifies Cascade 220 Wool and Debbie Bliss Rialto Aran yarns, both of which work at the same gauge and provide excellent stitch definition for displaying the cable and colorwork details.

The color palette includes six distinct shades: light orange, yellow, dark pink, dark orange, grey, and light pink. This multi-color approach creates the elephant motif and decorative elements characteristic of Thai textile traditions.

Needle requirements include a size #4 (3.5mm) 16-inch circular needle for the main body of the hat and a set of five size #4 double-pointed needles (dpn) for the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for the circular needle. The 16-inch length is appropriate for hat construction, allowing comfortable working of the stitches in the round.

The pattern calls for a gauge of 11 stitches and 13 rows per 2 inches, which is typical for worsted weight yarn. Achieving this gauge is essential for the hat to fit properly and for the cable and colorwork patterns to display as intended. The initial cast-on of 129 stitches creates the hat's circumference and is worked in the round from the bottom up.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are comfortable working with cables, multiple colors, and circular needle construction. The combination of cable work, colorwork management, and the precision required for the Crossover Join technique positions this as a project for knitters seeking to expand their skill set.
