Product Description
The sweater is knitted from top down using the contiguous method of shaping set in sleeves developed by Suzie M. The sweater is worked in stockinette stitch with a lace band on each side of the armhole. The sleeves are knitted in round in stockinette stitch. This sweater can be made with one color, or with several colors. I didn’t note when to change color, to leave you free to make your choice.
Terre rouge Sweater by marionknits
What is Being Made
The Terre rouge is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Marion Crivelli. This garment features a fitted yoke construction with set-in sleeves and is available in nine size ranges, from XS through 6XL, accommodating bust circumferences from 34¾ inches (88 cm) to 63 inches (160 cm). The sweater is designed with 1 to 2 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Terre rouge employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The sweater is constructed using a combination of flat knitting and circular knitting methods. The yoke is worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, while other sections may be worked flat depending on the knitter's preference. The garment features a structured yoke that measures between 7¾ inches (20 cm) for the smallest size and 15¾ inches (40 cm) for the largest size.
The sleeve construction involves increases worked from the underarm upward, creating a fitted upper sleeve circumference ranging from 11½ inches (29 cm) to 17¾ inches (45 cm) depending on the size selected. This tailored approach ensures proper fit across the size range.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – The primary stitch throughout the sweater. When worked flat, stockinette is created by knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side. When worked in the round, stockinette is achieved by knitting every round, creating a smooth, uniform fabric.
- Lace stitch – A decorative stitch pattern included in the design, worked from a chart with accompanying written instructions provided on page 3 of the pattern.
- Increase stitches – Including kfb (knit front and back in the same stitch) and kfbf (knit front, back, and front in the same stitch) for creating shaping and lace details.
- Decrease stitches – Including k2tog (knit 2 stitches together as one) for shaping and lace pattern work.
- Make one left (m1l) – A technique for creating invisible increases by lifting the loop between stitches.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Terre rouge is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for both the stockinette and lace pattern elements. The pattern requires double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the yoke and sleeves in the round, as well as circular needles for the main body sections. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and marking the beginning of rounds (BOR) during construction.
Difficulty Level
Classified as a beginner project, the Terre rouge sweater is accessible to knitters new to garment construction. While the pattern includes lace stitch work, the straightforward yoke-down construction method and clear stitch abbreviations make it manageable for those with foundational knitting skills. The combination of stockinette and lace stitches provides an opportunity to develop technique while creating a finished garment.
