Product Description

Inspired by beautiful Napa Valley right before harvest. Vineyards located on the rolling hills are terraced to ensure each grape cluster gets plenty of sunshine. Terrace Socks features a twisted stitch motif that is a modern play on the knitted grape cluster.

Terrace Socks are a toe-up sock in two sizes. The sock pattern knits up quickly as it is largely Stockinette. There are two heel options to choose. The motif is designed to be worked on the outside of each leg. Terrace Socks are very stretchy. The yarn suggested is a true Fingering weight to give them a roomy fit. For a snugger fit, choose a Light Fingering weight yarn. 100 g of either Fingering or Light Fingering is needed to complete the project.

Terrace Socks by Yarn Treats

What is Being Made

Terrace Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks inspired by the terraced vineyards of Napa Valley. The design features a twisted stitch motif that serves as a modern interpretation of knitted grape clusters, celebrating the agricultural landscape of rolling hillside vineyards during harvest season. The pattern is offered in two sizes with a finished circumference of 8 inches (20.5 cm) or 9 inches (23 cm) when unstretched, making them suitable for a range of foot sizes.

Techniques and Construction

Terrace Socks are constructed using a toe-up knitting method, which allows knitters to begin at the toe and work upward toward the calf. This approach provides flexibility in fit and makes it easy to try on the sock as you progress. The pattern is designed for intermediate-level knitters and knits up quickly due to its predominantly stockinette construction.

The sock features a distinctive twisted stitch motif worked on the outside of each leg, creating visual interest while the inner portion remains in straightforward stockinette stitch. This design choice balances aesthetic appeal with knitting ease.

Knitters have flexibility in heel construction, with two Fleegle Heel options available: a textured version and a stockinette version. This choice allows customization based on personal preference for heel appearance and durability.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – forms the primary fabric base and the inner leg portion
  • Twisted stitch – creates the signature motif on the outer leg
  • Fleegle Heel – the heel construction technique with two texture variations

Materials

The pattern recommends Sweet Georgia Yarns Tough Love Sock yarn, a durable blend of 80% Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon. Each skein provides 425 yards (388 meters) per 4 ounces (115 grams). The yarn weight is positioned on the larger side of Fingering weight, which contributes to the roomy, stretchy fit of the finished socks. For a snugger fit, knitters may substitute a Light Fingering sock yarn instead. The colorway shown in the pattern is Melon.

Needles specified are US 1.5 (size details continue in the full pattern documentation). The combination of yarn weight and needle size creates a fabric with excellent stretch and recovery, essential qualities for comfortable, long-wearing socks.

Pattern Features

Terrace Socks are noted for their exceptional stretchiness, making them adaptable to various foot shapes and sizes. The predominantly stockinette construction means the pattern progresses quickly, making it an efficient project despite its intermediate difficulty level. The two-size offering and flexible heel options provide customization for different preferences and fit requirements.
