Tenderheart Care Bear Chocolate Orange Cover or 15cm Toy
What is Being Made
This is a knitted stuffed toy or decorative cover inspired by the Tenderheart Care Bear character. The finished piece measures approximately 15 centimeters and features a segmented body construction with a distinct head and body section. The design uses chocolate brown as the primary color with accent details in white, red, pink, beige, and black to create facial features and decorative elements characteristic of the Care Bear design.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The pattern is suitable for beginner-level knitters, making it an accessible introduction to toy construction and shaping techniques. The design demonstrates fundamental knitting skills including increases, decreases, and color work through the use of multiple yarn colors for embellishment.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Stocking stitch – The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to form a smooth, flat surface ideal for stuffed toys
- Garter stitch – A textured knit stitch used selectively in the pattern
- Increases – Used to expand stitch counts for shaping, including increases in every stitch across a row to double the stitch count for the body foundation
- Decreases – Techniques such as knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) used to reduce stitch counts and shape the head and shoulders
- Slip stitch and pass slipped stitch over – Advanced decrease techniques for refined shaping
- Bind and tie method – A finishing technique where yarn ends are threaded through remaining stitches on the needle, drawn up, and tied off to close openings
Materials Required
The project uses 3.25mm knitting needles throughout. Yarn is double knitting weight wool in multiple colors: brown (primary color for the body), white, red, pink, beige, and black (for facial features and details). Only small oddments of each accent color are needed. The toy requires a small amount of polyester stuffing to fill the completed knitted pieces before assembly.
Pattern Structure
The construction follows a logical progression: the body is created first by casting on 25 stitches, immediately increasing in every stitch to establish a 50-stitch foundation. Stocking stitch is worked for 21 rows to create the body length. Shoulder shaping is achieved through knit two together decreases, reducing back to 25 stitches. The head section begins with strategic increases to expand to 37 stitches, then stocking stitch is worked for 17 rows. Final decreases shape the head closure. This modular approach allows the knitter to understand how increases and decreases control toy dimensions and proportions.
