Crochet a little sweater for your teapot! Besides being decorative and adding a touch of traditional flair to your home, a tea cozy is a very practical way to keep your tea warm during infusing and serving.
This well written crochet pattern has lots of colour illustrations, and includes directions on how to make a tiny pompom using a fork. The crochet pattern calls for 1 skein of Berroco Vintage worsted weight yarn, a 4.00 mm (G), 3.50 mm (E) and a 3.25 mm (D) crochet hook. The pattern uses the following stitches and techniques: single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, front post double crochet, back post double crochet, front post treble crochet and reverse single crochet.
The finished tea cozy measures 20.25 cm (8”) wide and 19 cm (7½”) long and will fit a standard sized teapot. The Gordon Ramsay Maze teapot by Royal Doulton is the model for the tea cozy shown. The blue tea cozy that is pictured was made using 1 ball of Cascade 22

Project Overview
The Tea Time Cozy is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by the independent designer knot•sew•cute. This intermediate-level project creates a functional and decorative cozy perfect for keeping your tea warm while adding a handmade touch to your kitchen or tea service.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a tea cozy—a small, fitted covering designed to insulate a teapot and keep beverages at an optimal serving temperature. The finished cozy measures approximately 20.25 cm (8 inches) wide and 19 cm (7½ inches) long, making it suitable for standard-sized teapots. The final dimensions are approximate and will vary based on individual gauge and the specific yarn brand used.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate crochet project employs a variety of fundamental and textured stitches to create visual interest and structural integrity. The pattern utilizes the following stitches:
- Chain (ch) — the foundation stitch used to create the base of the project
- Single crochet (sc) — a basic, tight stitch that forms the primary fabric
- Half double crochet (hdc) — a medium-height stitch used for varied texture
- Double crochet (dc) — a taller stitch that creates more open fabric
- Slip stitch (sl st) — used for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Front post double crochet (fpdc) — an advanced technique where the hook is inserted from front to back around the post of the indicated stitch, creating a raised, textured effect
- Back post double crochet (bpdc) — the reverse of fpdc, with the hook inserted from back to front around the post, adding dimensional detail
- Front post treble crochet (fptr) — a taller post stitch variation that adds additional texture and visual complexity
Post stitches (fpdc, bpdc, and fptr) are worked by yarning over, inserting the hook around the post of the indicated stitch rather than into the top loops, and completing the stitch with yarn overs and draw-throughs. These techniques create raised, ribbed textures that add both aesthetic appeal and structural definition to the cozy.
Materials and Gauge
This project requires 1 skein of Berroco Vintage Worsted yarn or comparable worsted-weight yarn. Each skein contains 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and yields 200 meters (217 yards) of yarn. The recommended yarn weight is aran, which is a medium, versatile weight ideal for creating structured garments with good stitch definition.
The pattern is worked with a 4.00 mm (size G) crochet hook. The recommended gauge is 9 single crochet stitches and 10 rows measuring 5 cm (2 inches) in an unblocked square. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the specified finished dimensions; variations in gauge or yarn brand will affect the final size of your tea cozy.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is well-suited for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore post stitches and textured techniques. The combination of standard crochet stitches with post stitch variations provides an excellent opportunity to expand your skill set while creating a practical, finished project.
