Tasseltastic Rectangular Shawl by Petra Christel Breakstone
What Is Being Made
Tasseltastic is a rectangular knit shawl featuring decorative tassels as a signature design element. This beginner-friendly lace project produces a finished blocked size of 46 inches in length and 11 inches in height without tassels, extending to 16 inches with tassels included. The shawl is designed as a quick-to-knit project suitable for crafters new to lace knitting as well as experienced knitters seeking an enjoyable, manageable pattern.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern uses the knitting craft with fundamental lace-knitting techniques that remain accessible to beginners. The design incorporates easy, manageable stitches that introduce lace construction without overwhelming complexity. The rectangular shawl shape allows for straightforward customization—the shawl can easily be made larger in both length and height by adjusting yardage accordingly, making it an adaptable project for various yarn quantities.
Stitches Used
The Tasseltastic pattern employs core knitting stitches including:
- Knit (K) - fundamental knit stitch
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) - a decrease stitch that combines two stitches into one
- Yarn Over (YO) - a lace-creating stitch that produces decorative holes and openwork
- Cast On (CO) - the foundation row for beginning the shawl
- Bind Off (BO) - the finishing technique to secure stitches at the shawl's edge
The pattern uses color abbreviations (C 1, 2, 3, 4) to denote color changes throughout the design, and rep notation indicates stitch repetitions.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
Tasseltastic requires approximately 200 yards of yarn total, with an additional 25 yards reserved specifically for creating the tassels. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, making it versatile for various stash yarns or dedicated knit kits. Suitable yarn weights include fingering, sport, DK (double knit), and worsted weights. The pattern is designed to work with a Layers cake yarn format featuring varying textures, colors, and weights, allowing knitters to use leftover yarns from previous projects. This flexibility makes Tasseltastic an excellent pattern for stash busting while creating a cohesive, multi-colored finished shawl. Standard knitting needles appropriate to the chosen yarn weight are required to complete this project.
