Tan House Brook Hat by Jennifer Lassonde
What Is Being Made
The Tan House Brook Hat is a slouchy knit hat designed by Jennifer Lassonde as a companion piece to her popular Tan House Brook Shawl. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a relaxed, comfortable hat available in three sizes: Adult Small, Medium, and Large. The finished hat measures 18 (19, 20.5) inches around and stands 11 inches tall, fitting head circumferences of 20 (21, 22.5) inches.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked in the round, making it ideal for knitters seeking to develop their circular knitting skills. The pattern incorporates a sampling of different stitch patterns throughout the design, offering beginner-level knitters an enjoyable introduction to stitch variation and texture work. The slouchy silhouette is achieved through the relaxed fit and stitch pattern construction, creating a modern, wearable hat with visual interest.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Make 1 purl (m1p) – an increase worked by picking up the strand between stitches from back to front, then purling it
- Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch pattern base worked in the round
Materials and Gauge
The Tan House Brook Hat is worked in worsted weight yarn, specifically Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Worsted in 100% Merino Wool. The sample shown features the Rock Creek Park colorway. Approximately 160 (170, 180) yards of yarn is required depending on size, with a total of 228 grams (400 yards / 366 meters) available in the skein.
The pattern is worked on larger needles at a gauge of 20 stitches and 25 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch in the round. Stitch markers are used throughout to note the beginning of each round, helping maintain pattern accuracy during circular knitting.
Difficulty Level
Rated as beginner difficulty, this pattern welcomes newer knitters while offering enough stitch pattern variety to keep the knitting engaging and enjoyable throughout the project.
