Product Description
This close fitting hat features a cabled band inspired by an unusual piece of Celtic knotwork, which appears to be a continuous line but is in fact a series of interlinked loops.
The cabled band is worked first, flat, then grafted together. The crown stitches are then picked up around the edge of the brim and worked in the round.
Please note that when working the cabled band, getting the correct row gauge is essential to the finished measurements. When working the crown, stitch gauge is more important. If you can't match both row and stitch gauge on the same needles, it may be necessary to use different sized needles on the band and the crown.
The cabled band pattern is provided both as a chart and as row-by-row written instructions.
Tallorcen Hat by Lucy Hague
What is Being Made
Tallorcen is a close-fitting knitted hat designed by Lucy Hague featuring a distinctive cabled band inspired by Celtic knot-work. This intermediate-level knitting project combines traditional cable techniques with a modern construction method, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their skills in Celtic cable patterns. The hat is available in two sizes to fit head circumferences of 20–21 inches (51–54 cm) for size M and 22–23 inches (56–59 cm) for size L, with finished heights of 7.5 inches (19 cm) and 8 inches (20.5 cm) respectively.
Construction Techniques
Tallorcen employs a two-stage construction method that sets it apart from traditional top-down or bottom-up hat patterns. The cabled band is worked first in the flat, meaning it is knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round. Once the flat band reaches the desired length, the stitches are grafted together using a seaming technique, joining the two ends seamlessly. After the band is complete, the crown stitches are picked up around the edge of the brim and worked in the round to create the main body and crown of the hat. This method allows for precise control over the cable placement and ensures a professional finish where the band meets the crown.
Stitches and Cable Work
The pattern features cable stitches as the primary decorative element, with the cables described as relatively straightforward and suitable for knitters new to Celtic cable knitting. The body of the hat is worked in stocking stitch, which provides a smooth, classic stockinette fabric that allows the cables to stand out visually. Stitch markers are used throughout the pattern to help track cable crossings and maintain pattern repeats. The gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stocking stitch after blocking, which is typical for DK weight yarn and helps determine the final fit and drape of the finished hat.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Tallorcen is designed to be worked with DK weight or sport-weight yarn, requiring 160 yards (146 meters) for size M or 180 yards (165 meters) for size L. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using 100% North Ronaldsay Wool, which provides approximately 273 yards per 100 grams. Knitters will need 3.5 mm (US size 4) needles or the appropriate size needed to achieve the specified gauge, along with a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable crossings. Additional materials include waste yarn for picking up stitches and 4 stitch markers to track pattern progression. The DK weight yarn choice makes this an efficient project that can be completed relatively quickly while still showcasing the intricate cable details.
