Product Description
Knit in worsted weight yarn, Talj, which means “Snow” in Arabic, will keep you warm during cold winter days. Simple cables and the unusual ribbing make this hat a fun but easy knit. Choose a faux fur pompom or make one with leftover yarn in the same or a contrasting colour. One skein of Malabrigo Rios is enough to knit the hat and make a matching pompom in a decent size. I recommend knitting Talj in either a solid or varigated yarn so the cable pattern comes out nicely.

Talj Knit Hat by Marielle Zatar
What Is Being Made
The Talj is a warm winter knit hat designed by Marielle Zatar for independent knitters. This intermediate-level project features a finished head circumference of 22 inches (56–57 centimeters), making it a standard adult size. The hat combines practical warmth with interesting stitch work, offering knitters an engaging but achievable project that balances simplicity with visual interest.
Construction Method and Techniques
The Talj is knit in the round from the bottom up, allowing for seamless construction without the need for seaming. Knitters have flexibility in their approach, as the pattern accommodates two popular circular knitting methods: the magic loop technique using circular needles, or traditional double-pointed needles (DPNs). This adaptability makes the pattern accessible to knitters with different tool preferences and experience levels.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details
The Talj showcases two main stitch elements that create its distinctive appearance: simple cables and unusual ribbing. The cable work provides textural depth and visual appeal, while the unconventional ribbing pattern adds a unique design element that sets this hat apart from standard ribbed hats. The cable pattern requires a stitch gauge of 26 stitches over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked with the larger needles at the specified tension.
The pattern employs standard knitting abbreviations and techniques including:
- Cable stitches: C4F (cable 4 front) and C4B (cable 4 back) for creating the dimensional cable elements
- Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 together) and SSK (slip, slip, knit) for shaping
- Basic stitches: Knit and purl stitches forming the foundation of the ribbed and cable sections
- Stitch markers: Used to mark pattern repeats and construction points throughout the round
Yarn and Needle Requirements
The Talj is designed for worsted-weight yarn, requiring approximately 155 yards (142 meters) total. Marielle Zatar suggests Malabrigo Rios as the ideal yarn choice, though any worsted-weight yarn meeting the specified gauge will work. The pattern calls for two sets of needles in different sizes to accommodate the typical hat construction of ribbed cuff and patterned body. Knitters will need 3.5mm (US size 4) needles for the initial ribbed cuff and 4.5mm (US size 7) needles for the main cable pattern, or alternative sizes to achieve the required gauge of 26 stitches per 10 centimeters in the cable pattern.
Skill Level and Swatch Information
Rated as an intermediate project, the Talj assumes knitters are comfortable with circular knitting methods and cable techniques. A gauge swatch is essential before beginning, as proper tension directly affects the finished hat size. The pattern specifies that gauge should be measured in the cable pattern using the larger needles. Knitters working flat swatches rather than in the round should note that the wrong-side rows require reversing the stitches (purling knit stitches and knitting purl stitches) to accurately represent the in-the-round gauge.
