THOUGH THE STRANDED PART LOOKS MUCH MORE LIKE TUNING FORKS, I NAMED THIS PATTERN “TALIKKO” WHICH MEANS (PITCH) FORK IN FINNISH FOR THE ONLY REASON THAT I LOVE THE SOUND OF THIS WORD SO MUCH.
Talikko is worked seamlessly top down. The corrugated ribbing at the folded collar and cuffs is continued in the stranded stitch pattern, which can be worked with either two or one contrast colours.

Talikko Sweater by Frl. Staedtisch
What is Being Made
The Talikko sweater is a seamlessly constructed, top-down knit garment featuring a hip-length body with a distinctive stranded stitch pattern throughout. Named after the Finnish word for pitch fork due to the designer's affection for the word's sound, the pattern showcases a visually striking motif that resembles tuning forks when worked in contrasting colors. This intermediate-level knitwear project combines classic sweater construction with modern colorwork techniques.
Construction and Design Features
Talikko is worked seamlessly from the top down, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous garment. The sweater incorporates a hybrid shoulder construction that combines elements of both circular yoke and raglan shoulder shaping, providing a comfortable and flattering fit. The body is designed with a straight silhouette at hip length, offering versatility for customization based on individual preferences. Knitters can easily adjust the body length to suit their desired fit.
The sleeves are worked almost straight but can be modified for a more fitted appearance using optional instructions included in the pattern. A corrugated ribbing detail appears at the folded collar and cuffs, adding textural interest and helping the neckline and wrist openings maintain their shape.
Stitches and Techniques
- Stranded Stitch Pattern: The primary decorative element uses stranded colorwork, a technique where two colors are carried across the row to create the pattern. The stranded stitch can be worked with either two contrast colors or a single contrast color, allowing knitters flexibility in color selection.
- Corrugated Ribbing: Used at the collar and cuffs, this ribbing technique combines knit and purl stitches in a way that creates visual definition and helps edges maintain elasticity.
- Top-Down Seamless Construction: The entire sweater is worked in one piece from the neckline downward, eliminating seaming and creating a professional finish.
- Raglan and Yoke Hybrid Shaping: The shoulder construction uses a combination of raglan and circular yoke techniques to create shaping that distributes increases evenly across the shoulders and upper body.
Gauge and Needles
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 32 rows over 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches) when measured in the stranded stitch pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit and is worked on circular needles in 3.5 millimeters (US size 4). A smaller needle size of 3 millimeters (US size 2.5) is used for the ribbed sections at the collar and cuffs. Knitters should adjust their needle size as needed to achieve the specified gauge with their chosen yarn.
Materials and Yarn
The Talikko sweater is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for the stranded colorwork pattern. The pattern requires circular needles in two sizes: 3.5 millimeters (US 4) for the main body and stranded pattern work, and 3 millimeters (US 2.5) for the ribbed sections. The specific yarn quantities and fiber content recommendations are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Talikko sweater is suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of seamless top-down construction, stranded colorwork, and hybrid shoulder shaping requires familiarity with multiple techniques, making it an excellent project for advancing knitting skills beyond the beginner level.
