Product Description
Synnott’s Mill Cowl is named for the first mill that stood on the Eno River, which runs behind my house. The mill was built sometime before 1752. Though nothing remains of the original mill now, one can imagine what that first mill on the river might have looked like, surrounded by the pine forest of the North Carolina piedmont. Flowing over the mill’s water wheel, the river would cascade down and create ripples and rough water on the normally placid surface. The chevron pattern of this cowl is inspired by the water flowing over the mill’s wheel.
Gauge: 16 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches [10cm] in stockinette stitch. Techniques: Pattern assumes familiarity with lace, provisional cast on, and Kitchener stitch.
Synnott's Mill Cowl by Sarah Sipe
Project Overview
Synnott's Mill Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern inspired by the historic mill that once stood on the Eno River in North Carolina. The design draws its aesthetic from the natural water patterns created as river water cascaded over the mill's wheel, translating these ripples into a striking chevron motif. This downloadable knitting pattern offers two size options to suit different preferences and styling needs.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a cowl—a versatile neckwear accessory that can be worn as a close-fitting collar or draped loosely around the shoulders. The Synnott's Mill Cowl comes in two distinct sizes: a Short version with a 21-inch circumference and a Long version with a 42-inch circumference, allowing knitters to choose based on their desired fit and drape.
Design Inspiration and Pattern Details
The cowl's defining visual feature is its chevron pattern, which captures the dynamic movement of water flowing over a mill wheel. This geometric stitch pattern creates visual interest while remaining achievable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern's connection to the historic Synnott's Mill—built before 1752 on the Eno River in the North Carolina piedmont—gives the design meaningful cultural and historical context.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern is worked using knitting flat construction, meaning the fabric is created in rows back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round. The primary stitch used throughout the cowl is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric base. The chevron pattern is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked into the stockinette foundation, creating the distinctive V-shaped motifs that reference flowing water.
Intermediate knitters will work with standard abbreviations and repeat instructions to build the chevron design across the width of the cowl. The pattern includes optional markers to help track stitch placement and pattern repeats, making the construction process more manageable.
Materials and Tools
The Synnott's Mill Cowl pattern specifies the following materials:
- Yarn: Plymouth Linen Concerto, a blend of 48% rayon, 42% linen, and 10% cotton. The Short size requires 1 skein, while the Long size requires 2 skeins. Each skein contains 101 yards (92 meters), providing a breathable, drape-friendly fabric suitable for a cowl that can be worn across seasons.
- Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) needles for knitting flat, sized to achieve the specified gauge.
- Gauge: 16 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the cowl to fit correctly and display the chevron pattern at the intended scale.
- Additional Supplies: Smooth scrap yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holders, a darning needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and optional stitch markers to track pattern repeats.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with pattern repeats and shaping techniques. The combination of stockinette stitch with chevron increases and decreases provides a good balance of challenge and achievability.
