Product Description
This darling sweater is an interesting but quick knit. Most of the detail is found in a simple textured pattern on the yoke, while the arms and body are all simple stockinette. The style is feminine and functional, pairing well with any outfit, but also something you can quickly throw on your little one when going for a walk in spring or fall. This is a fabulous baby shower gift or the perfect project for mom as she waits for her new little one. It was designed for, modeled by, and named after my daughter, whose daddy calls her “sweetling".
Sweetling Cardigan by Maria Yarley
Project Overview
The Sweetling Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed for babies and young children, created by independent designer Maria Yarley. This garment combines quick construction with thoughtful design details, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a manageable timeframe without sacrificing visual interest. The cardigan features a feminine silhouette and practical styling suitable for layering during spring and fall seasons, functioning equally well as a handmade baby shower gift or a personal project for expectant parents.
Design and Construction Details
The Sweetling Cardigan employs a strategic approach to pattern placement and construction efficiency. The majority of visual detail is concentrated on the yoke area through a simple textured pattern, while the body and sleeves utilize straightforward stockinette stitch. This design strategy allows knitters to work through the project quickly while still achieving a finished garment with distinctive character and depth. The feminine aesthetic pairs seamlessly with various outfits, making this cardigan a versatile addition to a child's wardrobe.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This project is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric. The yoke features a simple textured pattern that adds visual interest without requiring complex stitch manipulation. The pattern is designed to be worked with yarn held double, which affects both the gauge and the final fabric characteristics, creating a slightly denser, warmer textile suitable for a baby garment.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
The Sweetling Cardigan is worked in sock or fingering weight yarn, held double throughout the project. The required yardage varies by size: Newborn through 6-month sizes require 620 to 800 yards, while 12-month through 24-month sizes require 940 to 1,240 yards of yarn. Knitters should use US 5 (3.75mm) needles or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in stockinette stitch with yarn held double.
Available Sizes
This pattern accommodates six size options across two groupings:
- Group One: Newborn, 3-month, and 6-month sizes with finished chest measurements of 15.5, 17, and 18 inches (39.5, 43, and 45.5 centimeters) respectively
- Group Two: 12-month, 18-month, and 24-month sizes with finished chest measurements of 19.5, 21, and 22.5 inches (49.5, 53.5, and 57 centimeters) respectively
Skill Level and Project Suitability
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Sweetling Cardigan requires foundational knitting knowledge and comfort with basic stitch work, but does not demand advanced techniques or complex shaping. The straightforward construction of the body and sleeves makes this an accessible pattern for knitters developing their skills, while the textured yoke pattern provides an opportunity to expand technical abilities without overwhelming the maker.
