Product Description
This pattern is available individually and as part of the [Something Sweet eBook][3].
This simple shawlette design is perfect for using those single skeins of candy colored variegated yarn that follow you home from the yarn shop, but can’t find a use for. The garter stitch and open star stitch sections help break up unwanted pooling and show off quick color changes. This pattern can be worked in any weight yarn by adjusting needle size and the number of pattern repeats.
When using different weights of yarn for this shawlette, try these suggested needle sizes for proper drape: Lace - US 5-6 (3.75-4mm) Sock/Fingering - US 6-7 (4-4.5mm) Sport - US 7-9 (4-5.5mm) DK - US 9 -10 (5.5-6mm) Worsted - US 10.5-11 (6.5-8mm) Bulky - US 13-15 (9-10mm)
To make a larger or smaller shawlette, add or subtract repeats from either section, additional details are included in the pattern on where to add and subtract rows.

Sweet Shoppe Shawlette by Tori Gurbisz
Project Overview
The Sweet Shoppe Shawlette is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile shawlette ideal for crafters looking to use single skeins of candy-colored variegated yarn. The design showcases how thoughtful stitch selection can transform potentially problematic yarn characteristics into design features.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a shawlette—a smaller, more wearable version of a traditional shawl. The Sweet Shoppe Shawlette is specifically engineered to make the most of single skeins of variegated yarn, particularly those with quick color changes or unpredictable pooling patterns. The finished piece works as an accessory that can be worn around the shoulders or styled as a decorative wrap.
Design Features and Techniques
The shawlette employs strategic stitch choices to enhance the beauty of variegated yarns. The pattern alternates between garter stitch sections and open star stitch sections. This combination serves multiple purposes: the garter stitch provides a solid, textured foundation, while the open star stitch creates visual interest and helps break up unwanted pooling that can occur with variegated colorways. The open construction of the star stitch sections also allows color changes to display prominently rather than blend together.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout sections of the pattern, created by knitting every row. This classic stitch provides texture and helps manage color pooling.
- Open Star Stitch: An openwork stitch pattern that creates decorative motifs and allows variegated colors to showcase their transitions effectively.
Yarn and Materials
The Sweet Shoppe Shawlette is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different fiber choices. The pattern is available for both DK weight and Sock weight yarns. The sample shown uses Madelinetosh Tosh DK, which is 100% Superwash Merino Wool with 225 yards per skein. This superwash-treated merino provides durability and easy care while showcasing color variations beautifully.
Gauge and Needle Specifications
Gauge is not considered critical for this project, making it accessible for knitters with varying tension. However, the pattern provides gauge specifications for reference:
- Sock Weight Gauge: 14 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch
- DK Weight Gauge: 12 stitches and 19 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch
Knitters are encouraged to adjust needle size based on personal tension preferences. Tight knitters or those desiring a more open, lacy fabric should consider going up one to two needle sizes from the standard recommendation. Washing and blocking a swatch before beginning the full project is recommended to ensure satisfaction with the final fabric appearance.
Pattern Flexibility
The Sweet Shoppe Shawlette demonstrates excellent versatility through its adjustable construction. The pattern can be worked in any yarn weight by simply adjusting both the needle size and the number of pattern repeats. This adaptability makes it suitable for various yarn stash options beyond the specified DK and Sock weights, allowing knitters to customize the finished size and drape according to their preferences and available materials.
